First let me say that I wasn't to thrilled to see it at the theatre across town
for a simple reason: they have really poor theatres. The theatre I work
(Marcus) and the opposing theatre (Carmike) were both trying to get SW.
We had better sound and larger theatres however, Carmike lied and said
they had two DTS theatres when in fact they had only had one 4-channel
house (no sub, mono surround) and the other large theatre was mono.
Well, Lucas said if they didn't upgrade, they would lose a print so they did
a quick half-ass upgrade to DTS. It is less than spectacular but thats not
the point. I saw SW on Thurs. and the print was already scratched (yellow)
in two spots. That however is not the worst of what I have heard:
Opening night 12:01 show in their second theatre, someone put reel #2 on
backwards! It was a sold out show and they could even show it because
they put the reel on backwards. They have only had the prints for 2 days -
I can't wait to see what they look like after several weeks...

I did a TAP evaluation on opening day of Star Wars at a local
monster-plex. One print was scratched on the first show. The second print
was dropping in and out of SDDS constantly. The third print had a horrible
static in the sound system. Also, the trailers (the brand new 60 second ones
intended ONLY for Star Wars) were dirty as could be and had lots of
black and green scratches. Anyone able to top that report?

Well, we're having a host of problems in our new 18-plex. This theatre
really should not have opened when it did, but it was already committed to
"Phantom Menace" opening night. Technical problems include the dimmers,
the sound processors, the amps, the platters.... There's still dust, dirt, and
gunk from construction.... metal aperture plate filings sitting on the
lamphouses waiting to fall in the projector... somewhere during opening day
a nasty green scratch was made nearly in the center of one of our 5
prints.... a good deal of film flakes have worked into 2 other prints, and no
one seems to have had time to mount the brackets for the cleaners. The
situation is stabilizing though. A pretty wild ride, considering I am new to
projection.
