For those of you in the Dallas area, the Granada Prestonwood is starting a 70mm repertory midnight series this week!Their first print is "Top Gun" and I believe they are working on getting such great titles as "Aliens", "Titanic", "Die Hard", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Pink Floyd's The Wall", etc. If you're in the area, check it out! It just could be one of the last opportunities to see these films presented in 70mm.

If you get there, let us know the condition of the prints. Raiders should be turning by now. It just missed out on LPP (damn!) Pink Floyd always sounded great, but the image was very soft in the 70's of it I have run.PS, Did you know it's now called "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" on DVD?

The theater has a CP65 which isn't magnetic split surround friendly. The sad part about it all is, the theater USED to have a CP200 with Aux rack!!!
Oh well, it's still 70mm!

Nope. They wouldn't stoop to that level to run Godzilla regardless of the format. What a horrible film!According to Universal, all of the Far and Away 70mm prints have been junked..."but there's 35mm prints available!"
Yeah, that's just great. Go to all of the expense of shooting a film in large format and then just junk them! I wonder if Ron Howard saved a 70mm print?

It's a pity they chose Far and Away to go with the 70mm again. If it had been a halfway decent movie, maybe 70mm would still have a heartbeat today. Did you get to see the cheesy 70mm trailer for that film? Sheesh!

Baraka is a dialogue-free documentary directed by Ron Fricke who was the d.o.p. on Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi. It was shot on 65mm in 1991 and released in 70mm mag split surrounds on a couple of prints. It's been running at the theater I used to be chief in every other Wednesday night for the past 7 years (I think it's seven)The images are SPECTACULAR.
...and the complete absence of Philip Glass's music is another added bonus.
What else are they going to run?

Another 70mm print that they should thinkabout is Backdraft
We ran it a few years ago at Cinesphere.
Another title there is a 70mm print od in Toronto in Pink Flyod the Wall and it has great sound and a audience following

Please define "a few years ago". I checked on Backdraft 2 years ago and Universal claimed they had destroyed all 70mm prints. Their only existing 35mm one was plagued with green and yellow lines.Do you have a print number and storage location for that print of "The Wall"?

In line with Universal's comment about junking all the FAR AND AWAY prints but saying "we have a 35mm print." I year or so ago tried to book TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and was told (with a touch of pride in the bookers voice) "Oh no, we junked all the 35mm prints....BUT WE HAVE A 16MM PRINT."These people would be better off in the garbage business.

Yes, Paramount was very kind as to track down that specific print! It just came in today and the FilmGuard coating is still on it, although I can tell the one theater it played at after Northpark had it did lay some scratches on it...but I'm willing to bet another couple of passes through FilmGuard will completely cover those up.Glad you liked Top Gun. Now I know why the 70mm prints that ran there when UA owned the place kept breaking on a daily and sometimes show by show basis...I'm willing to bet large sums of money the gate/trap wasn't realigned to allow for proper tension on 70mm and the rollers were just "flipped over" and gate/trap/shoe was swapped. When everything was switched around for 70mm, the tension was so great that the gate would barely latch shut with a loop of film in it. Just turning the motor over by hand was tough.
One of the managers who used to work there told me they went through a couple of intermittents. I'll bet they were over-stressed from the gate tension. Anyway, it's perfectly aligned now and purrs nicely.

The only 7omm print of Top Gun left in Australia LOOKS great, but has badly cut sprockets at the end of spools two and four but oddly, not six making it very tricky to run without crashing. One would assume someone had some heavy duty tension on the feed spindle on one of its long runs.
How was the colour on Raiders?

Raiders print came in looking like shit. The color was faded brown a bit, but not bad. There were more splices than I care to count and tons upon tons of damaged sprockets and hinging splices. The mag tracks also required a complete cranking of the HF controls on the preamp cards, and even then was a bit dull with standard eq settings. Once the print was inspected and cleaned multiple times, it looked pretty decent, but nothing great. I would prefer to have ran a reprint in 35mm over that 70mm print.

Are you saying there ARE some reprint 35's of 'Raiders' around?We doubled it in 70mm with Top Gun once and had to make sure Raiders ran first or the audience would have lynched us for the crapped out colour. It's still my favourite film, though and the only film I've ever had the opportunity to run in 70mm, 35mm, 16mm and Super 8mm. (The 16mm is mine and I gave away the condensed 8mm as I couldn't stomach it to see how much they chopped the film up to make it fit into 20mins...YUK!)

Yes, Raiders has been reprinted twice in the last 5 years. Be forewarned though, the most recent printing was on polyester stock and it completely sucks! (yes, I'm being nice about it) The one before was printed on acetate and is magnificent!No one at the lab bothered to check the color timing when they printed on polyester and the new prints are green. Yuk!

A 70mm print you don't hear of much today is "The Doors", do any exist?Another reasonably recent 70mm print that was a blow up, but did look very good was "Howards End".
One of these days I must write down all the 70mm prints that I have either run or known of, there sure were some oddities. "That's Entertainment", "Gone With The Wind" reissue and even I believe "The Jolson Story" reissue.
I can recall at various times cutting up prints to use as 70mm leader, some titles were "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", "Cleopatra", "Battle Of The Bulge", "Can Can".
Right into the mid - 1980's we ran 70mm trailers, I wonder if many of these survive?
John, the 70mm print of "Raiders" we ran here in Melbourne was in the same theatre for 18 months. The print had only one break during its run and lost a few frames during the fight scene next to the aircraft. "Pink Floyd The Wall" did sound great in 6 track 70mm and I recall the support short was the 35mm "The Who - Face Dances". (For the record the short supporting "Raiders was on Australian stamps!!!).
Several times in the early - mid 1980's Greater Union were running 3 70mm films at theatres within 2 blocks of each other, those were the days.

Beware if that print of The Wall is the same I ran at the Egyptian in Seattle last November it's faded brownish-red. The sound at the beginning of reel 1 is poor all through the opening sequence (with much hiss and low volume) and it suddenly comes up at the start of the first song. Also somebody had used pinking scissors to cut heads and tails off and repair damage. Since there were several other cuts before and after those cuts it was quite a mess. To add insult to injury the last scene of reel 4 was spliced to the head of reel 5. Needless to say it left in better shape than when I received it (but just maybe a little more red.)
Also had a problem with the 70 print of Lawrence I ran there. All the overture and exit music bits were cut off and piled onto one reel in no particular order. Put a lot of love into taking care of that print as well.
