It looks like the Cat 222 SR/A card isn't as good as I've been lead to believe, then. The Cat 300 is apparently superior to it, and, as I understand it, should always be used in studio/mag applications.
This quickly raised another question: What about the old Cat 280T SR card? How is it when compared to the above two cards? Are 70mm mag applications possible? Etc.
The 222SR/A is an econo card that gives you near SR quality for less money than two SR cards and one or two A cards. It is certainly better than nothing (and thus far better than any knock-off SR I have heard)but it simply doesn't measure up to the Cat. 280 nor 300 nor 350.

Is the dual SR OK for optical, since the DR of optical is less?
When using SR-D, (I'm assuming that the digital track hads a DR about the same as mag) is the dual SR card OK?
I was under the impression that SR-D completely bypasses the 222 SR/A in digital mode. When the digital sound fails, then the optical would apparently sound better with two Cat 300 than one Cat 222.
This is at least how I read this one.
Define OK? It describes the bulk of the new installations out there. Dolby claims it is ok and in fact claims it is only ok for optical.
The fact it doesn't track as well as say the Cat. 300/350 is still true and you can hear the difference rather easliy (in my opinon). Most of the world does not get an A/B comparison though.

There are a couple schools of thought on that one...
Since optical is fall-back format for digital, don't spend extra money on the fancy SR.
The other side is since we are using optical as a fall-back we must make it as close to digital as possible to minimize people noticing when we are on the optical track.
Both sides have valid arguements.
