One of my fellow techs has been having a problem with a Cinemeccanica CX1600 lamphouse for several months now. The lamphouse will not strike by the 4th show of the day. He has replaced everything in the igniter three times. He has also replaced the lamp and cables three times. We conference called with a third tech to brainstorm but couldn't come up with anything other than a rectifier problem. He says he has 80VDC across the lamp (which I think is a little low) whether the problem is present or not. This lamphouse is being powered by an Irem rectifier.Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a 3-phase IREM rectifier? If so, a phase could be dropping out. Check connections for cleanliness/tightness. Check the "RA" relay board for cold solder joints and take the cover off of the relay itself and look at the contacts to see if they are pitted. If so, repair or replace the relay and/or the whole RA relay board assembly. Sometimes there is an electrolytic capacitor on this board that either leaks or dries up and should be replaced. These are all located inside the IREM rectifier once you take off the top cover.

I had six of the CX 1600s with the same problem. Finally noticed that the points on the spark-gap were rather pointed, and thus, able to leak off a high-votage charge due to corona. I took off the spark gap, unscrewed the points, threw away the centre one, filed the two on the ends to a rounded shape, and set the gap about the thickness of a dime.
Has been working fine for 15 years now.
