Filled in for a sick projectionist today in our 9-plex and noticed a little teeeny tiny gaffe in the trailer for "My Dog Skip" that was running on "Tigger Movie":

About halfway into the trailer the voice-over announcer says, "This JANUARY..." and I am saying to myself 'oh boy this trailers gotta be pulled its advertising the wrong month' then at the end of the trailer it has a title card with music that said it was coming in MARCH! So Which is it, Warners? hehe

Back to the original topic at hand, Lets see more trailers WITHOUT the dates and stuff, makes life better for subrun and international releases, etc... Same goes for posters.

They got a sign out side of Toccini's new theatre that says Opens November 1999. Still not open.

They finally removed the 'Opening Thanksgiving 1999" from the Roxy 14 sign last week.

We got a letter from New Line to pull all one sheets and trailers for Lost souls when it got pushed back.

I hate those dated trailers and one-sheets! Disney is the worst.

For one-sheets, I keep on hand a variety of colored plastic tape and cover the #%$# date up. For trailers, if the date is in the middle, and if I have any spare time, I cut the date out (after pre-screening the trailer) using this procedure:

1. Run the trailer while sitting next to the projector
2. Hold a "magic marker" near the film just below the sound reader
3. When the offending "this January" or whatever goes by, mark the film edge with the marker
4. Trim the marked section out. Keep an eye on the image and try to trim on a "scene change" if possible so as not to have any "too-short" scenes

In some cases, this makes a noticable jump in the trailer, but in most cases, it doesn't. I would guess that 97% of the crowd never notices the splice, but they sure do notice when a date is in there and we're running the trailer a month later!

I agree it is much better when they don't announce the date. So if it's wrong people think that it's your fault. Lost Souls is a perfect example.

Don't forget the original long version of the "Titanic" trailer that ends with the word "SUMMER"! I have one of those on my reel of "cool scope trailers" right before the last version that says "DECEMBER."

Fantasia 2000 Trailer says coming this Jan. 2000. We were told to start programing it at the end of Dec. thru it's I-max run which ends in April.

Oh yeah! I forgot about the Titanic 'SUMMER' trailers (and the giant triangle-shaped standee that also read 'summer')- had to ask a projectionist to remove one of those back in November. just looks stupid IMO.

Or the Disney stuff that gets moved back as well: 'Mighty Joe Young' stuff that read "SUMMER" (Xmas final release) and "American Werewolf in Paris" 'This October' (Dec final release as well)

Release dates on trailers arent the only things that get changed before a film's final release date-titles do too. I have seen way-post-title-change trailer runs in theatres of 'The Flood' (released as 'Hard Rain') and 'Eaters of The Dead' (released as '13th Warrior') for example...

Bumping this back up top 'cause I've got a good one:

The trailer for The Shipping News has a voice-over that goes "This Christmas . . ." Guess what? The Shipping News comes out 12/25 in NYC/LA and 1/11 nationwide. Who's releasing it? Miramax. Yes, Miramax -- which releases a lot of product in December as "Oscar Bait". No other studio clogs the pipeline that way.

Aaron: WB planned My Dog Skip as a limited release in 1/2000, then decided to make it a wide release in 3/2000. I came upon that particular trailer when I saw Snow Day in 2/2000.

I’m not playing Lord Of The Rings until January. I’ve had to remove from the trailer twice, the text reading December. The splice during the trailer fortunately doesn’t notice, but at the end, the cut sound splice does which is most annoying to presentation. Second run bookings should be entitled to have undated trailers and posters. There have been numerous complaints about these matters at exhibitors meetings, but of course are just consistently ignored. In the UK cinemas are charged for trailers and posters from the majority of renters, with the exception of Buena Vista, Icon Distribution, and Film Four.
