One of my theaters called a few days ago with a most interesting problem...The two platter work lights run on 12v. The brightness of the work lights dims and gets brighter, depending where the feed arm is in its motion during payout. As the brain enguages to start the platter lamps get brighter and the oposite is also true. Another odd situation is if you enguage the brain to its max setting and you remove the work lights the speed of the payout motor increases. I am going to replace the varaic because of dead spots on it. The platter otherwise runs normally. The takeup platter does hunt/oscillate but I think this is caused by the failing varaic. Any help is appreciated.

Now that is weird. The work lights should be on seperate circuits (at least they are on our Strongs). Possibly their is too much load on the circuit the platter is hooked up to? Have they added anything as of late?

I don't have a schematic of a XNR-335 handy, but I think the 12v power control circuits of the platter are shared with the work lights.

Since you are going to replace the variable transformer anyway, you can see if the light still dim. But, I'm guessing that there's a problem in the power supply.

Is this that older Xetron platter, with microswitches in the payout head? And a take-up control arm on the side that has to be picked-up and locked in before threading?

I haven't noticed some fairly new (as of last year) Xetron platters doing that, but I have noticed the lights flickering and dimming on the very new Strong platters while they're working. Seems like a pretty poor circuit design.
