Thought I would share this revelation from the mavens at Technicolor. As the operator of a second-run theatre I recently received a print of 'Girl Interrupted' from Technicolor. When I opened the cans, there was film everywhere unravelling. There were no bands on any of the reels (They had been thrown in the cans) and no leaders & tail on any of the reels (They too had just been thrown in the cans - but at least had a frame left on so I could figure out what went with what). Two of the plastic reels were smashed to pieces. And to top it off, the print was badly scratched throughout.This was the second time in a year I had received a realy bad Sony print. Each time when I called Technicolor to complain and to ask how a print in such a state could be sent out, each time I was given the same response. It was not Technicolor's fault - Sony would not pay for print inspection. When I asked did that mean that Technicolor did not even open returned cans, I was given the same response ...'Sony does not pay for that level of service'. I was told if I didn't like it I should take it up with Sony.

Ahh, so that is why Sony prints come in the old beat up grey cans instead of the nicer semi-beat up orange cans.The idiats showed up on Friday and asked for Dronwning Mona. I told them they could go take it out of the projector it was running in if they wanted to. Then they called us on Tuesday saying they would need to pick it up on Wednesday. To bad we are running it until Thursday.

Technicolor's level of service is really not worth paying for anyway. Perhaps Sony knows that. Too bad it's the theatres that pay the price. I really don't see why any studios continue to use Technicolor. It is just mind boggling. And Technicolor is too afraid to respond to anything on this forum, although I KNOW they read it regularly.So why doesn't everybody just state their gripes about Technicolor here (not just Sony prints) and maybe they will listen.
And then again, Technicolor seems to think that they don't make mistakes. At least that's the feedback that I have gotten from them personally (I have lots of e-mails and a fax to prove it)

i tried to email the technicolor folks about their awesome reels and their mail server just happens to be down right now. shucks. must be from all of their fan mail.

Hmm...if all the Film-Tech people start sending mail to Technicolor to complain about stuff, wouldn't that amount to a distributed denial-of-service attack against their mail server?
What's up with those new translucent Technicolor reels...they're almost as bad as the original black ones.

Those new translucent reels are crap! TES should just buy the same reels ETS does. At least they don't fall apart.

The reels that I 've been getting in my theatre have been so bad that I've had to use a split reel to make up and especially break down a show. Me and a couple of other projectionist I know started writing nasty notes to technicolor on the cans with big black felt pens. My other friend called technicolor and asked to have reels sent to him so he could break down his movies (he's been getting alot of used art films lately) They finally sent him a box of reels, but some of them are just as bad as the ones in the cans. At one time, the word technicolor was a good thing
