I just ran one of these on our sneak of "Where the Heart Is." While I was watching the trailers through I, along with my manager and the rest of the audience, noticed that the soundtrack was out of sync with the picture bigtime. I mean this wasn't some barely noticable thing, it was bad. Now I know it was the film, becasuse the feature and other trailers did not have this problem. I haven't gone through and checked the other trailers we got, but I can assume they will all probably be like this.

I know the promo isn't supposed to kick off until May 5, but have any of you started running this trailer early and noticed this? Or did I just get a bad print(s) of it?

On a positive note the CMN trailers came in boxes, not bages, on 4" cores, sealed in ziplock baggies to boot. Odd there should be such a flaw with the soundtrack, all other things being so well done.

I guess we're just over-achievers-- we started that trailer last week. All 5 are just fine, actually, and I haven't noticed anything wrong at all.

We started selling the ballons today and they were a big hit with the easter (pre-easter) crowd.

Prints are made from separate picture and soundtrack negatives, printed at the same time on a contact printer having two printing heads. If the picture and sound negative are not threaded in sync, all the prints will be out of sync. The number of prints that are out of sync will depend on the number of prints made when that printer was mistreaded.

The sound negative contains the analog track, and the digital tracks, so if the sync problem is due to a printer misthread, all the tracks will be out of sync.

Standard SMPTE 40 specifies that the analog soundtrack have a displacement of 21 +/- 1/2 frame from the picture. In other words, the analog sound should be printed exactly 21 frames ahead of the associated picture frame. If your trailers have a distinct sound like a gunshot or clap, you can look at the print to verify the 21-frame separation between picture and sound.

I try to help where I can with hopefully understandable explanations of the technology.

"Shit Happens". But if we understand something about the digestive system, at least there is an explanation, and we can deal with it.
