Brad,
I have a bunch of I.P. mags some of which go back to the late 1930's. Would you be interested in putting these on line? There is alot of interesting stuff in them. I hardly have the entire bunch that was published but it would make a good start and perhaps others out there have them and could help complete the lot.

Great idea, if you can get permission to republish. Probably as much good technical "stuff" in there as older SMPTE Journals.------------------

Brad, I'd rather send you the actual mags since you have to scan them anyway. I'll pay for UPS to you if you return them to me. Also....what about copyright on this stuff? Some of these are real old and it probably won't matter...actually it sould not really matter at all but I'd hate to see you get them on line then have to shut them off for copyrignt problems. Each mag is anywhere form 15 to 30 pages.
Let me know.John, The articles by George Mitchell were particulary good in most cases. And would be interesting reading for newbies.

As of current, single sided photocopies are the only way I can scan into pdf. They are not scanned on a traditional type flatbed scanner.

His name was Robert Mitchell and his articles were fantastic. His book "Mitchell's Manual of Practical Projection " was a classic.------------------

Sorry about that Bob, You're right. George Mitchell used to write for American Cinematographer Magazine. There are just too many Mitchells out there....and then there was the camera.........
Brad, I have a flatbed scanner. Can I scan them for you and send you the stuff on a ZIP or CD rom? If so what format should I use.......I have never done any PDF stuff before.

I would. No one's trying to make any money off it. The worst thing that ever happens in situations like this is the owner materializes and asks you to cease and desist. Big deal.But that would be good in this case, because we could finally find out who's been hoarding the boards all these years (again, if an owner even exists, which I seriously doubt)! Then a REAL republishing deal could be worked out for everyone's benefit. I mean, who wouldn't want to buy brand-new copies of the Mitchell book?!

Mark,Scanning those and sending them to me in any other format other than pdf would be a waste of time, as to keep Adobe files to a reasonable size everything MUST be scanned directly into pdf format.
Single sided photocopies are the only option at present.

Mark:If it's OK, I would be willing to help with this scanning effort. You could send me, maybe, 10 at a time. I'll scan them, pdf them, return the orginals to you and the pdf files to Brad. I'll will take some time, but you know, we'll just keep working on it.

I think it would be a good idea to scan the International Projectionist magazines and put them all (or as many could fit) on a cd rom and sell them. I'd buy one for sure. Same with the old Motiograph magazine called "The Sound Track".

Speaking as an archivist, this would be an excellent resource to have available either online or in CD form. I've recently finished researching an article on the changeover from nitrate to safety stock in the late 40s (which - shameless plug - will appear in Roger Smither (ed.), 'This Film is Dangerous' published by Flicks Books and due for release anytime now) and went through a lot of these magazines, and also 'International Photographer' in the British Film Institute library.A lot of the material in there just could not be found anywhere else, especially detailed descriptions of equipment, cinema design, film handling practices and economic information on the cinema industry from a perspective which rarely made it into any of the main trade papers or the scientific journals which covered film and related technologies.

A good way to handle the copyright issue would be to work with I.A.T.S.E. to help get the publications online. They might appreciate the offer to have them scanned into .PDF format so that they could be used for legitimate research. Copyright used to extend for only 27 years and had to be renewed. I believe that now it's for life +50years, so almost everything is covered with the current exception of things which were published more than 75 years ago and other items which for various reasons have fallen into the public domain. More than likely they'd simply say "go ahead and put 'em on your forum", but I'd check first just to keep things legal. I'd sure love to see them.
