Okay, so I'm a little slow at seeing the new movies, but I finally saw U-571 and there were some "contrasty" scenes in there. It was odd. Of course, most of the movie takes place at night, underwater and/or inside dimly-lit submarines. Those scenes all looked fine to me. But any of the daylight scenes or brightly-lit interior scenes looked way too contrasty to me. Bright parts of the picture were washed out, dark spots of the same shot were too dark.Am I just imagining this? Did anyone else notice this? Is it possible that what I saw was printed badly while the majority of other prints were okay?

The print I screened looked fantastic. (But then again, I like harsh blacks and blinding whites too.)

The prints that I've seen looked very good--razor sharp and surprisingly little grain. They were a bit more contrasty than a lot of newer films, but I'd assume that this was intentional, as a way to evoke the general look and feel of the IB Tech prints of WWII films from the 1950s and 1960s. I recently saw a British IB Tech print of "Guns of Navarrone" (great film, BTW) in 4-track mag, and the look was very similar.
