I just downloaded and took a look at Joe's training video - Great Job!. I've learned a lot and can't wait to try it all out. Put some oil on a hard starting xenon, what a great idea

PS - How did you do those cool CGI effects?

Go to the film-tech home page and click the download link. It's 24 megs so if you have a slow connection prepare to wait a while, but it's worth it.

That's one of the funniest shorts I've seen in a long time. Congratulations Joe, fantastic job. It took about four minutes to download it and was well worth it! Oh, I should mention that was with a cable modem connection.

Video IS good for something. Please let us know how you did those effects and what software you used.

I'm glad everybody enjoys it (so far)! I am always looking for suggestions for a new version.

I filmed it with a Canon XL1 DV video camera. The data was transferred to my computer (a Mac G3 - I have since moved up to a G4). It was edited with EditDV. The special effects were done with Painter 4.0.3 for the Mac, as well as Ray Dream Studio 5 (also for the Mac). It was then exported back to tape. Then over a year later I transferred the finished video to my Mac G4, encoded it into MPEG using Xing MPEG Encoder for Windows (via Virtual PC on the Mac) and that's the file you now have.

Yes, it is that old. Can't wait to do an update!

I also did the graphics for this site (the "Film-Tech Forums" logo you see at the top of each page and the "This Blows", "It'll Do" and "Good as Gold" logos) using Ray Dream Studio 5 for the Mac.

It is also important to note that I made this video long before I met Brad Miller and was introduced to FilmGuard, which is why it is not featured in the video. Also, this is the original version, I did not add any sound effects or anything else to it. I'll do all that when I make the "sequel".

Absolutely hilarious, Joe! Good timing, too... very sharp! I loved the bit about running the show manually, HAHAHAHA! That was priceless. So, who was everyone? That would be my only suggestion, to add some credits.

How do I upload my videos? I have some fantastic Ray Dream animation of an exploded intermittent movement in operation, for a drive-in video I was doing.

I too loved the "manual" job, payout roller and projector. Reminds of having to babysit Saving Private Ryan either because of static or the variac on the Speco platter died so we used the makeup table to control the takeup.

I usually don't add credits to things this short, because it doesn't seem that they would fit in with the material, but here goes:

The main guy who introduces the video, gets his finger cut in the splicer, gets blown up by a xenon bulb (twice), and the narrator is some moron named Joe Redifer (me).

The other guy who pulls out the ring and gets zapped by static is Tom Barnes, who used to be a projectionist when this was made, but is now the manager of his very own movie theater.

Mr 70mm is Jeff Skallan, who has been the head projectionist at Mann Bowles Crossing 12 since the day it opened. He is still there holding his finger on the film when his rollers fall off to this day.

The majority of this was filmed at Mann's Bowles Crossing 12 in Littleton, Colorado. 2 scenes were filmed at Mann's Chinese 16 in Aurora, CO.

Josh--you mean you're _not_ supposed to fold 70mm film in half to make it fit on a 35mm makeup table roller?!?!

Seriously, Joe's "training" video was great. I think that it should be required viewing for the Screencheck inspectors.

Kodak actually has a copy. So does Christie (but I never heard their opinions on it). They have the 1/2 resolution version (VHS). The MPEG is almost 1/4 resolution.

I will film the next version in 65mm, reduce it to Super8 and then transfer it to video where I will edit it. Then it'll be transferred to a 70mm print. Quality is my only concern.

great make-up too. i really believed that the guys face really turned blacd\k and his eyes became elongated(must be very nearsided after that one heh heh) just like in all of the looney toons cartoons.

did the stars get their own trailers?

speaking of trailers got any?

although it did not have enough violence drugs or well ya know the ending left me fulfilled and happy. it really made me think. Better yet it did not leave me hanging. it was not one of those cliffhanger endings. I can not even begin to explain how much more complete i feel now. i think ill go watch some oprah winfrey.

I think the second one should have a ton of star wars innuendos. oh yeah and matrix rip offs. any movie will be funny or do good if you have either of those. (Deuce Bigalow, Scary Movie, Weird Al etc.) and lets not forget cross advertising? have a bottle of filmguard laying around in the booth somewhere.(just kidding)

i give it **** well you get the point.

Well, Ethan, glad you finally got to see it. I made it on a total budget of -- lemme do the math here -- $0! Shooting took 3 days (because of everybody's different schedules) and 1 day to add all of the special effects and do the editing. I will try to have more sex and violence in the next version, but I think that this one already has plenty of that. Most people are complaining that is has TOO MUCH sex!

I specifically designed this video with my clever engineering skills and diabolical mind so that Holmes users could never see it!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! I don't think WebTV has a 25 meg cache. Have one of your friends with a computer download it for you. You do have friends, right? Oh well, who needs friends when you have the Holmes?

I suspected this.

I knew there was a conspiricy(?) to keep WebTV people out of the loop.

I do have a friend (!) that has a real computer who has told me for a year that he would set me up with a real one. I already gave him a B&H 545 projector--rebuilt as my end of the deal--but no dice yet.

I also know that everybody discrimnates against Holmes owners here due to the lack of pictures in the warehouse..... Oh I GET IT! The ones in the warehouse are PROFESSIONAL!

Now I must go roust Mother, who lives in the bedroom at the top of the stairs. She's been looking a little leather-y lately. I think a nice day in the fruit cellar will do her a world of good.

She's been awfully quiet since the Holmes fell on her head.

Joe, neat job there. As a video producer, I nominate you for the national "Projection Training Video Oscar", whatever the heck that means. I made a projection training video myself back in '92, but it was serious and with no SFX. Your's is much better and more fun to watch. You are much different than I imagined you to be. You have a very nice sense of humor. Keep up the good work. And Brad's right, you "videotaped" the piece, you didn't "film" it (but who's being technical?)

Excellent, Joe! Well done...huge laughs throughout.

I particularly love the idea of the guy being used to replace a roller for an entire feature. The worried way that he looks at his watch is just priceless!!!
