Ok, I know the awards were awhile ago, but I wasn't a member then, so I will ask now. Do people agree with the Academy's decision to make American Beauty the best film? I certainly do! I saw that movie 3 times, plus I...uh,umm, "borrowed" the poster. I think it is great. I don't know anyone who has seen it as many times as I have. I hope that they write a novel.
(Yes, I know that this is off projec. subject, but hey, it's movies, ain't it!)

I thought that 'Insider' was a better movie, IMO...Aaron

'American Beauty' is a quality movie, without a doubt. Having seen it a few times as well as many other nominated films, I feel that 'The Insider' is a stronger film overall, as is 'Magnolia'.And don't get me started on 'Election' (which is a masterpiece in my opinion) 
But then, I would have trouble deciding between 'Election' and 'Magnolia', so the Academy does have a tough job.
One of the most positive things about this year was the sheer number of quality character-driven pieces up for nomination. I hope this trend continues!

American Beauty was the right choice. For an interesting read, go to http://www.script-o-rama.com/snazzy/dircut.html and scroll down to American Beauty. You'll find an early draft with many changes from the final script. It is, well, not a very good script.
It goes to show, that anyone can write a script. It's the re-writes and the touch-ups that made this the fantastic film it turned out to be.
