My Rentec CD-100 dowser has al of a sudden decided to not open fully. It feels as though a spring is springing.

What should I look for?

If the dowser doesnt fully open but you can open it fully with a 'spirited push' then the fix is easy. Remove the cover and at the end of the actuator bar you will find where there is a spring-like clip that engages with the two screws/rivets on the end of the actuator bar. Usually this spring is too tight. Spread the spring apart a bit and things should work much better.

If it seems like it is binding terribly or catching on something then one of the coil armatures has come apart from the actuator bar. Look in the bottom of the dowser casing, you are certain to find the little phillips screws that have fallen out. Replace the screws and all should be well again.

If it is not opening (or closing) at all, or it seems completely stuck in mid-throw or fully open/closed, then its a good possibility that one of the coils is fried, causing the plastic bobbin the coil is wound upon to melt, seizing the armature(s). Coil replacement is the only solution there.
