Last week my manager told me that Regal Cinemas, which is the only other theater chain in Chattanooga, has filed bankruptcy. I checked this forum every day to learn more but no one has mentioned it. Doesn't anyone out there work for Regal? Or did I hear wrong? Regal is mainly based in the south and unfortunately there aren't that many of you who work in the south. Maybe that's why there aren't many quality theaters around here. Besides Atlanta, I think Carmike(my employer) and Regal are the only choice you have in the southeast, especially here in Tennessee. Now they are both bankrupt! What is going to happen? There is supposed to be a new theater being built in certain area of Chattanooga where they just shut down a Carmike 6-plex. Who's going to build it. Regal and Carmike own the southeast.

I assure you, Regal has not filed for bankruptcy. As for which theatres are in the southeast, mainly regal, cinemark, carmike, AMC, UA, ect... just like in everywhere else.

They may not have filed bankruptcy yet, but it will probably happen. They over extended too much too fast on nothing but credit. They have a few out west. One opened a few months ago, and from what I heard one of the regional chains (Century) was invited to look it over to buy it. It was suppose to have 3 snack bars, and it was economized down to 1. There are areas of the theatre that look like they were intended to be snack bars. Does not sound good, if they cut back on stuff that far into construction.

You mentioned "areas in the theatre that looked like they were intended to be snack bars". The Regal "Hollywood 27" (27 screens !!)in Nashville has multiple snack bars I've never seen open in three years!!
Posted by Kevin Crawford (Member # 469) on 08-21-2000, 01:41 PM:
I forgot to mention that this is a 20 plex plus IMAX. The concessions counter is only 8 stations. Does not seem like alot of stations for that many screens.

I worked at the Regal 27 the first year and a half and they only opened the other 3 snack bars during the first week and then shut them down. Very poor management has let this theater run down really fast!

I understand Regal filed last Friday at 5pm.Beware of the Cinemark rumor...it's looking like Lee Roy and his boys will be doing the same in the next couple of weeks.

Some of you have mentioned the Hollywood 27 in Nashville. Someone told me that this was originally a Cobb project and that Regal took it over. If so, do all of the screens at Hollywood 27 have adjustable masking? Cobb tended to put adjustable masking only on their largest screens. All others tended to be 1.85:1 only. I've never been to the Hollywood 27 to see a movie, so I've never had time to check the place out.

From an actual Regal employee, here are the known relevant facts. These are taken from a New York Times article from last week, by the way. Regal currently has 1.8 billion, yes BILLION, dollars of debt. One of two investment firms that hold a large (500 Million) stake of Regal's stock is looking to write off their investment. I can't remember their name off the top of my head, but the firm that hasn't spoken yet is KKR investments. Regal also reports losses this quarter that are quadruple last year's for this time. Bankruptcy has not been declared as yet, but it is possible (my thoughts). According to the article, the only plan mentioned by Regal is to cut new theatre construction next year to 2 and to sell off 115 currently operating theatres, yes, one hundred and fifteen. I'm guessing, hoping not, that it will soon be time to look for new employment, sigh.-Mike

2 weeks ago moodies derated regal to junk bond status and said in sept they probably wouldn't meet a bond payment requiring them to proceed into chapter 11?
anones gues is good at this time

I have worked at Hollywood 27 since it opened, and our masking will move out and in but not up and down. I know nothing about regal going bankrupt but have heard the word reconstruction used a few times, sounds like something is rotten it knoxville. You never know with theaters what they are going to do. I have a moto since i have worked in theaters for the past 10years, "Do not believe it untill you see it."
Posted by Mike Beerbower (Member # 363) on 08-22-2000, 08:44 PM:
This may or may not mean anything, but I have heard that Regal tried to back out of their contract to build a new theater here in Erie, PA, and was unable to get out. Now they're stuck building this theater that they apparently don't want.
Brad: What Cinemark rumor? The Tinseltown 17 I work at is a little down, but still going strong. There have been budget cuts recently, but my understanding was that they were simply the result of a bad summer. Is Cinemark USA in trouble?
Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 08-22-2000, 11:30 PM:
Cinemark isn't exactly flourishing. Your theater may be doing well, but they've got lots of bills to pay. Give it a month and see what happens. It's just a rumor at this point, but from a pretty reliable source.
Posted by Aaron Flack (Member # 517) on 08-22-2000, 11:45 PM:
I think that Regal wants to try something just because of Carmike's situation. They don't want to make the same mistake, but they probably already have. I still hope they or some other chain builds this new theater in town. I'd like it to be a different chain, rumors are it could be AMC. That wouldn't be much improvement though considering all the criticism about the major chains.BTW, I don't think there are any Cinemark, AMC, or United Artists theaters in TN. I've read that there's one General Cinema in Memphis, but it's a long shot for them to come here, even though I'd like them to based on the good things you all have said about them. We used to have a theater run by UA but Regal bought it out two years after it had opened, since then it's gone down. I wish Tennessee had more chains, but Carmike and Regal want to rule this state for some reason. Even Nashville only has Carmike and Regal(from what I've read, correct me if I'm wrong).

I wouldn't hold your breath for GCC to come into town. First of all they only plan to build one more gigaplex in the next fiscal year. Nov '00 to Nov '01.
Secondly, they are concentrating on the North East. And trying to build theatres in inner cities, or places that nobody else can build in.
But with everyone else selling or closing a bunch of theatres, it is possible that they may buy some theatres. But if you are holding your breath, I would suggest that you make it a deeeeeeeeeeeeeep one.

Actually - there is a Cinemark in Oak Ridge, TN - Tinseltown 14.

CORRECTION:
The Stevens Point 5 is not closing. The Mariner 4 in Surperior, WI, is however.

And to increase my post count-the Sterling in Austin, MN, a 3 plex, is also closing.

Never trust what I say again. You see, last night at about 2am I had this wonderfull brainstrom. I could figure out which Carmike theatres were closing where by checking to see if the theatres in question had updated their online showtimes with next weeks schedule. This should be done on Tuesday (not replacing the current one, merely appearing below it).So I began my investigation. I saw that the Mariner 4 showtimes were not updated and that Steven's Points were. So since I knew for sure Wasua and Appleton were closing, and that there were 3 total, that the Mariner 4 must be next. WRONG!! I can say with absolute certainty-ie I talked to my Division and District Managers today-that the Mariner 4 IS NOT closing and Stevens Point is.
Well, with my new found discovery I began investigating showtimes in other states. This is how I figured that the theatre in Austin, MN was closing. WRONG. Checked the showtimes again today, they're updated for next week.
So in clonclusion, my theory is still partially sound, I was just checking too early.
Posted by Paul Konen (Member # 41) on 08-24-2000, 08:01 AM:
I would wait until Wed to check these times. With eNowShowing that Cinemark is tied into, I check my theatre times to see what and how many prints we are gaining / losing. Sometimes when the schedule is made out and the information is pulled at night something is wrong and they get it fixed on Tuesday. So by Wed is should be correct.Paul.
BTW. Cinemark now has new ticketing options.

I've found that the Carmike theatres in my area (Huntsville/Decatur, AL) sometimes do not get their showtimes posted until midday Friday! About a month ago, on Friday morning, I checked the showtimes for the Carmike 8 in Decatur and nothing was listed. I called the theatre to verify that they hadn't closed, since the last couple of times that had happened with two other theatres in my area, they had closed!I find that Carmike's theatre showtime information varies in consistency and reliability from theatre to theatre. Some list the sound formats and have the showtimes available early. Some list nothing but the movie titles and times and don't get them up until the last minute. One week not long ago, out local Carmike 10 had the previous week's showtimes posted for an entire week!

Today, it's Edwards Theatres that has filed for Chapter 11 Protection. For those that may not know, this is a strong regional company primarily located in Southern California with 700+ screens.

What do you expect. These big time companies with MBA's and corporate attorneys that do demographic studies etc etc. surely they know a little common sense. WRONG!!!
WRONG!!!
Edwards is no exception. They put a 20 screen complex in the same parking lot of an AMC30 in the Ontario Mills Mall down here in southern calif near Rancho Cucamonga bout 40 miles east of L.A. Here is the problem. Both theaters were built roughly at the same time. (months apart) They are about 500 yards away from each other. The area is already saturated with theaters but that never stops anyone. The AMC30 is adjacent to the Mall. (access from the mall) The Edwards is not. Everyone that shops at the mall goes right to the AMC. Now why did someone at least not think about this?Rory

Yet the Edwards 3d Imax killed the museum run Iwerks Ultra70 3d theatre in the mall
Does anyone know where that equipment went it was being sold
Posted by Aaron Flack (Member # 517) on 08-24-2000, 01:41 PM:
We ought to just go down the list of the five largest theater chains and countdown the days 'til bankruptcy.
Posted by Dave Cutler (Member # 515) on 08-24-2000, 01:52 PM:
We tried to get some of the Ontario iWerks equiptment here at the Kansas City Extreme Screen, but they would only sell all of it as a whole. I don't know who ended up buying it. I think I saw their Ultrasonic 70mm splicer up for sale on eBay though.
Posted by Gordon McLeod (Member # 33) on 08-24-2000, 07:17 PM:
They had a different dubber than what I was used to seeing visible in the booth photo I saw. It looked like a hybrid Westrex unit as the head cluster was on the right hand side
Is that what you have at the Kansas City extreme? Some one said it might be a cinema products unit?

I work for Regal at the present and we asked the hard question of everone in Knoxville and to date Regal has not filed and are working hard not to. Unfortunatly the good old rumor mill has killed off and burried more people and companies than ever were killed in every war.
Posted by David Kilderry (Member # 142) on 08-30-2000, 05:44 AM:
Rory,There is a story behind Edwards building in Ontario Mills. It is big business Vs the family company.
52 screens that sit across the lot from one another with an existing Pacific 10 just down the road! This has undoubtedly been a drain on Edwards, but if you want the full, facinating story, email me off forum.

Posted this morning in the Hollywood Reporter online edition:"Regal Cinemas appears set to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week after a long standoff between proposed buyers Anschutz Corp. and Oaktree Capital Management and current owners Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. approaches resolution. The Chapter 11 filing . . . could come as early as today, but is expected by the end of week, sources familiar with negotiations said. 'It is now down to a day-to-day situation,' one source said, claiming key deal points had been resolved, but declining to say if Anschutz and Oaktree planned any concessions to current controlling shareholders. Hicks Muse and KKR, who took control of Regal in a 1998 leveraged buyout, were unhappy that Anschutz's planned restructuring of the company after a likely Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing would leave them with nothing to show for their $1 billion investment."

People have been saying that they've expected Regal to file Chapter 11 ever since Carmike did last year. I wonder if this Hollywood Reporter story is another wrong guess. There is only one day left before "the end of the week". I guess we'll know by close of business tomorrow.------------------

August 31, from http://www.abiworld.org/headlines/todayshead.html
(ABI World)
quote:
Investor Anschutz Close to Buying Regal CinemasBillionaire investor Philip Anschutz is close to taking control of the No. 1 U.S. theater chain, Regal Cinemas Inc., from two major private equity firms, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Hicks Muse Tate & Furst, Reuters reported. As part of the deal, Regal would file for a prepackaged bankruptcy action and seek court approval for an arrangement that would give Anschutz a 60 percent stake in Regal’s equity. The Denver-based Anschutz Corp., Philip Anschutz’s investment vehicle, and Los Angeles investment firm Oaktree Capital Management, hold a majority of Regal’s $1.8 billion in long-term debt. Much of that debt would be converted into equity under the terms of the bankruptcy deal. If the proposed deal were approved, Oaktree would hold a 15-percent stake in the struggling Knoxville, Tenn.-based company, with the remainder held by other parties.
Regal has already defaulted on some debt, which prompted creditors to demand an expedited payment schedule in the last year. The company said in June that it retained financial advisors to restructure its debt and said it may not continue as a going concern. It posted a net loss of $121.7 million in the first half of 2001.

Here's a link to the Reuters story via Yahoo!Regal lost $121.7M in the 1st 6 months of 2001. How can you go through all that money and still remain in business? Look at what happened to The Industry Standard.

It's now official according to this story from Reuters via Yahoo! How long before the new owners start shutting theaters? Regal has 6 theaters in northern New Jersey and I'd say 4 of the 6 are on the bubble.
