I know it is a relatively simple operation to adjust the sync on a CP 500 but my question is can I do it while a movie is running?

The reason I ask is because I just ran Any Given Sunday in Dolby Digital and the voices were about a second out from the image, the movie immediately before that was perfect. I should have tried SR but for some reason didn't think of it at the time.

Second question is that the fans in the front panel have been sucking in fine dust which is coating the cards inside. Should I leave it alone, blow it off with compressed air, use a fine brush or what?

Thanks in advance because I am not really a 'sound' person.

You must be refering to those "TOYO" fans!?
Careful with them while blowing compressed air. They seem to be quite delicately balanced because I was able to jog one with the air pressure off me hose and its never worked the same since. It seems to be spinning eccentrically in its shaft and makes a whinny noise now. It should be replaced however. Just a note!

Generally speaking, dust won't hurt the cards. If there is a *lot* of dust around the fans, you might carefully brush it away (shut the unit off to keep more from getting sucked in.)

When your service guy comes, maybe that's a good time to clean it out better.

Unless you have the SRD reader above any other penthouse-type readers (which if someone had threaded thru the other reader(s) rather than around them would cause the SRD sync to change) or someone had grossly misthreaded a basement reader soundhead(which would not only throw digital AND analog sync off but would have probably damaged the film), then you most likely have a bad print and shoud get it replaced immediately.

But, yes you can adjust the delay while the film is running.

We played with this on an install (no customers).

It sounds kinda cool when you change it while it is playing *grin*.

*waits while everyone scampers off to hear it*

The earlier reply was correct in the fact that it should not have changed on its own. My guess is either a mis-thread of some kind or a screwy print.

I ran the same print again today, it is still out of sync.
We have a basement reader and it was definitely threaded correctly. Therefore I am assuming the print is dodgy.
I was going to try and correct the delay during the show and set it back to normal afterwards but decided not to try experimenting while there were paying customers.
Yes, they are TOYO fans and I think I will leave all the dust where it is for the time being if it is not doing any harm.

Before you go changing anything, make sure that it's not the print.

Does it play okay in the previews and then go out of sync in the feature?
What happens when you change prints from theatre to theatre?
Does is always happen at some 'predictable' time, such as when a certain person works?
Does it happen only for part of the feature?

There are a dozen quwestions like that that you have to answer for yourself before you make changes to the processor.

I just took over as asst. tech. for a bunch of theatres and EVERY time I walk into a new theatre there's at least one problem I have to solve simply because "somebody" fooled around where they should'nt have. That's not all that bad but when I ask who did it and why, the answer I invariably get is, "*I* didn't do it!" -- Well *SOMEBODY* did!

Now, I'm NOT saying you're not qualified to make that kind of adjustment. You MIGHT be 10 times the tech. that I am. I'm just suggesting you take everything into account before you jump in with both feet.
