any idea why clicking on 'chat' causes just another (albeit empty) forum to come up? What happened to the Java client?

Aaron, you must've at some point modified your preferences. I'm guessing they are set for "display last 30 days topics" or something like that. They need to be set to "display topics from the last year", which is how all accounts were originally set up.You can do it manually each time you enter, or you can click "preferences" and save it there.
