I have an A.V.E. 35mm Transportable (Shinkyo) Projector. I'm using a Dolby CP50. In setting up the A-chain, I noticed that I can't reach the Dolby tone level. I'm already overdriving my exciter, a BSS (6V/1A), at 10V. I noticed that other soundheads have a 36 to 50 watt exciter, while mine is spec'd at 6 watts.

Does anyone know if the base for the BSS or BSB can be used for a higher wattage exciter? If so, which one could I try? Thanks.

Is the exciter a NEW one? Is it properly centered? Is the slit lens clean?
Other exciters to try:
BXB 8.5volt 4 amp

The exciter was relatively new (about 5 hours on it), but I blew it out trying to pump more current into it. It was properly centered.

The slit optics is hard to tell how clean it is. I've certainly tried to clean the external glass as best I can, but not knowing what a good clean one looks like, I could have a problem here. I don't know.

Will the BXB fit in the same base receptacle as the BSS?

What type of stereo cell do you have Is it possible that the cell is incorectly hooked up?
Sometimes with prevosts and 6v 1amp lamps we had to convert over to american style lamps to get enough gain or modify the preamp circuit

It's a mono solar cell. What are "prevosts"?

I'm not familiar with the BSS lamp off the top of my head.

Kinoton has used a 6V 1A exciter lamp for decades and I haven't had any problem achieving Dolby Level with it on CP-50s or later units.

The other Kinoton exciter lamp is a 5V 4A that I like much better since the filament is longer and doesn't have the fall off like the standard 6V 1A. The Kinoton lamps have Philips lamp numbers not ANSI codes like BSS so I don't think they would be the same as used in your machine.
