I came across this in the LA Times ad for pacific theaters:

"CINERAMA DOME ENTERTAINMENT CENTER WITH 14 ADDITIONAL ALL-STADIUM THEATRES OPENING 2002!"

Are they destroying this world famous landmark or are they adding on to it? Anybody know?

I know that they plan to demolish the Hollywood Bowl but you wouldn't think they'd do this...

What's next, the Chinese Theater's main auditorium being made into a 5-plex?

Well based on that headline there, it clearly says 14 ADDTIONAL.... meaning they are probably building another plex on the property somewhere, but I dont know.

According to the Cineramaphiles in rec.arts.movies.tech, the Dome is remaining as-is (as a single screen, they are doing some retrofitting and remodeling of the interior of the Dome building however) and a 14-plex and shopping mall complex are being built around and behind the big Dome.

Yep, at the closing weekend (July 28-30) we were all assured that the Dome would be retained as is, with only some refurbishing (and hopefully a three-strip Cinerama projection system). The 14 additional screens are supposed to go "in back", which makes me wonder how small they're going to be.

Oh yeah, and they *are* doing something similar to the Chinese, aren't they? They somehow demolished an entire area surrounding the Chinese and are building another theatre/shopping/parking deal.

The wonderful original Chinese theatre on Hollywood Boulevard remains in operation. The "Hollywood and Highland" project includes a huge theatre that will become the home of the Academy Awards, and a premium quality six-plex. Kodak is a major sponsor and very involved in the project:

There are several companies that build dome theatres. How many dome theatres does IMAX have? There is a dome here at Union Station in downtown Kansas City. It's smaller (also doesn't run with film), but it's definately is not owned by Century.

Hey John,
What the heck is a "Premium Quality 6 Plex"? Is there really such a thing? I don't think so. I've never been in a plex that I would consider premium. Thats a status that really remains for only a handful of single screen theaters around the world. Premium Plex??? Common now......

The six theatres haven't been speced out yet, but I understand that they want to really do something special in all of them to offer superior presentation quality, perhaps even attracting "premier" business that needs moderate sized auditoriums. The neighborhood competition includes the Chinese, the El Capitan, the Galaxy and the new Dome complex, and the theatres also will be competing with a few other fine theatres in LA. There's alot of effort to revitalize that area of Hollywood, and this complex is intended to be the "jewel" of that revitalization. Kodak is proud to be part of it.

Indeed that part of town does need a bunch of revitilazation. I hope all goes well there and it helps out. I guarantee you it would be the FIRST premium plex in the world.

Let's not get confused between the Cinerama dome which is a dome shaped building and ImaxDome/Omnimax where the actual screen is dome shaped
