My theatre is showing 'Top Gun' this Friday and Saturday night. My Paramount rep has told me that this will be a BRAND NEW print. Struck just a couple of months ago. Unfortunately they didn't incode an SRD soundtrack. He said it would be too expensive, but i can't see that it wouldn't be worth it. They already have a 6 channel master, seems like it would be a simple process to encode it to SRD. Anyone know what it costs to encode SRD from a 6 track master?I am going out of town so I won't be able to see it myself, I am a bit dissapointed. Hopefully it will still be here when I get back, middle of next week.
BTW, I am going to Boulder CO. Brad, if you are working I might drive down to visit. Anyone else in that area? I might take a side trip to Colorado Springs.

There is a demand for it I guess. We brought it back for a special show. The print they sent was CRAP! It broke (5) times during make up and inspection. (film was brittle-had poor repair splices that had to me remade) The last guy was rough on this!! Lines and splices!A Gotta see on the big screen!

Dave: Maybe someone from Dolby could say how much making a new SRD (Dolby Digital) sound negative from an existing 6-track mix would cost. At a miniumum, there is likely a licensing fee, plus the cost of recording and processing the sound negative. It may be cost-prohibitive for only a few new prints.
In another thread, Brad mentioned that "Raiders of the Lost Ark" has some new prints with SRD tracks. Sounds like Paramount has bigger plans for that one.

Why don't Paramount re-master the audio for the new prints, even though it's only a few prints, these would defently get booked all the time. For hardcore fans of RAIDERS it will be a MUST to see again in Digital. LaserDisc's are avalibel with Digital if i remember right. Do they use the same mix for Video and 35/70mm prints?Hope this makes sense!

I seriously doubt that there will ever be another Indiana Jones movie. Harrison Ford is now 58 years old. By the time the big three...Spielberg, Ford and Lucas get together, it will be at least another three years making him 61 at least.I don't think I want to see Indiana at that age. Anyone remember seeing Roger Moore running around trying to be James Bond in A View To A Kill? His stuntman had more screen time than he did.
I hope Harrison himself keeps on acting but playing within his age's range.
Indy's adventure's are finished...let's just enjoy what we've got.

Paramount's pretty good with keeping their Rep features in good shape. We ran the newly struck Sunset Boulevard last week and it was great. The only print we had a problem with was Ferris Buellers Day Off, which after complaining to my agent at Paramount they agreed to take it out of circulation. With any luck we can get them to print another. The print I got for this week's showing of Roman Holiday looks great too. Seems like it was done up only a couple of years ago. (doing Audrey Hepburn month in October, with any luck we'll have a decent turnout)

Which Ferris Bueller print did you get? I got the same print (#665 from the Landover, MD DTS depot) two years in a row. I believe that there's at least one additional print in the same facility. 665 was OK...it was an original '86 print, Dolby A; color was good, but print was a tad splicy.

Damn, I can't remember which print number I had.... it came out of New York. It was splicy, but the soundtrack was trash. All staticy, and crap. We had to run it in mono to help coverup the crap.

In making inquiry with my Paramount rep, I am told the new print of Top Gun (along with ones for Raiders & Ghost) were struck for use this summer as part of a travelling outdoor show for the promotion of the Cinemax cable network. It was supposedly in Philly and a few other major cities.By the way.... I did ask about digital sound upgrade with regard to Raiders. I was told it was simply a new print of the original release wihtout any upgrade or enhancements.
Does anyone (beside me) find it strange that the only way Paramount will strike new prints is for the promotion a cable TV network?

John Wilson,In fact there will be a new indy film. Harrison may be that age but he is excited to do the picture.
M. Night Shyamalan (sixth sense, unbreakable) is in negotiations to write the new picture.
There is nothing wrong with a 61 year old Indy. It is conceivable that Indy would reach the age, and that he wouldnt just retire and take social security benefits. I mean he's Indy for cryin out loud.

See what happens, I go out of town when something cool happens. Oh well. My fellow projectionists tell me that the print was indeed brand new, never been touched, a virgin. Very cool. It looked beautiful on screen I am told, and it is already gone on to been appreciated by other film going audiences. A shame I missed it.Brad, sorry I didn't get a chance to stop by while I was in Colorado this weekend. Sounds like you were out of town yourself anyway. Hopefully next time.
