The motor on our Strong 5 star soundhead has frozen up. It makes a noise like it is trying to turn but just doesn't quite make it. Seeing as how I don't have a manual for the motor, disassembling it is difficult. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What's the motor? There are a lot of motors out there that drive Simplex soundheads.

Sounds like it might be a start winding or start capacitor. Need a little more info, though...

Sadly, the manuals seldom cover the drive motor except as a totally replaceable item. I know we can't get parts breakdowns for them -- and we buy quite a few...

For starters, are you SURE it's the motor?

Take the belt off the motor pulley and try to turn the projector over by hand. You'll probably have to take the back covers off and turn the 'driven' pulley.

...OR... is it the old kind where the motor sits sideways?... Then you'll have to undo the coupler. (The "U-Joint" thingy.)

Whatever the model, the theory is the same. Try to see if the projector mechanism has locked up or if it's really the motor.

(HOPE it's just the motor )

OH! By the way... Make DAMN WELL SURE you have the power turned off when you go tinkering around there!!!
Just remember, on most projectors the switches and power disconnects are all out of reach of somebody standing on the off-operator side. If you get your arm caught in there while it's running there's NO WAY IN HELL you'll be able to turn off the motor!!! And that thing WILL snap your finger like a dry twig if you get it caught in there!!!

Since it is five star the motor is belt driven so remove the belt and see if it will turn over
There were 3 commnly used motors on the 5 star
A nonsyncronus that you could get a replacement at granger
the two sync motors were Bodine (black finned beasts) and Leason
The Bodines do have problems
