If anyone still doubts the reliablity of DTS timecode on 70mm prints.At the Millennium Dome in Greenwich (London)we have been screening the same prints since May 2000 of the 30min 70mm DTS film "Blackadder Back & Forth" and now have been screened 420 times (approx) without any loss of timecode or DTS sound!, and that's without using Filmguard.
Please let us see more new 70mm films in cinemas with DTS!.

420 times? Ha! That's nothing! I can show you a special-venue place that runs 70mm mag-striped prints of the same film 19 times a day in twin theatres. They get about 2500 runs out of each print (at which point, the picture is ok ,but the tracks start to wear out).
These are ESTAR-base prints. When they were using acetate-base prints, the print life wsa somewhat less.
And, no, they don't use Filmguard (yet) though I should probably try to introduce them to it...

DTS is the one format (especially with the ridiculously large 70mm format's timecode track) that isn't going to benefit as far as reliability wise from FilmGuard or anything else. Now if you were talking Dolby Digital or SDDS, that's another story.

Handled properly, print film is very durable. Some of the special venue theme parks that use film prints in their attractions have gotten tens of thousands of showings from Kodak ESTAR base prints. In most cases, these were prints run in loop cabinets with some form of on-line cleaning. ------------------

We at DTS are ready, willing, and able to do as many 70mm shows as the industy will release. The problem seems to be that studios don't want to invest in the extra expense of making 70mm prints. It's too bad, especially in light of the success of TITANIC. The theaters I spoke to that had the print in DTS 70mm did great business. They told me that audiences looked for theaters with the DTS 70mm presentation. And, even though the prints were blow-ups (of 35mm), they looked great!I wish I could say there were more shows coming, but I don't know when the next DTS 70mm (general) release will occur. As far as I know, there is nothing scheduled for the immediate future. And, most likely, it will happen in Europe before the states.

I've projected "American pie" for almost 400 times in Dolby Digital (Italian version didn't have DTS 
) and the error rate of the DD was 4.5/5 (started with 4).
DTS is stronger than DD with durability.
I suppose that you can show a print thousand of time without having problems with DD or DTS.Bye

Antionio,Sure, no problem. I'll try and get shots of the 70mm reader and a stretch of film and post it here on this thread within a day or two. It's a damn shame the studios aren't using this fantastic system. That 70mm Titanic I ran was magnificent and blew away the 35mm backup show print we had collecting dust.

There was a fairly good print of "2001" available in 70mm (somewhat red, was all) but Warner INSISTED on us screening a newly struck 35mm stereo print instead. Hardly what Kubrick intended, even though they claimed to have the approval of Kubrick's staff or whatever...

That I don't know. I have never seen a 1570 machine with a DTS reader. Mine run off tach pulse. I have only seen the timecode on the DTS flying disc logo in 1570, not on anything else.BTW, if you have only seen the flying disc logo in 35mm, you are really missing out. In 1570 it is truly amazing. Picture is rock solid and the colors are amazing.

I for one would buy 70mm equipment if the studios would make prints available to our market. If you look at all the new builds with wall to wall screens, there are at least 4 screens per complex that are tailored made for 70mm. Maybe George will bend the arm of the studios on the next Star Wars and insist on all 70mm. Not! I still dream of winning the lottery too!P.S. Wonder why you never see a demo with DLP versa 70mm?
