Has anyone tried using it to clean slides for there ads? I know it would be alot of work, but we have a photography customer that wants the dirt off of their slides.

Also Brad, yes I do have a mount for the film cleaner. Had to do some rigging for 3 of my theaters. Our slide projectors are mounted right above our Simplex 35 so the cleaner does not have room. Had to use 6 inch bolts full of washers (50 on each bolt for stability) thru the mount to get the cleaner above the slide projector body. Looks ugly but works.

How would you apply a thin even coating of FilmGuard to slides? Any liquid would be absorbed by the slide mounts.

I suggest using a PTR to clean the slides. Simply roll the soft PTR over the slide on a clean, flat surface. Any dust or dirt on the slide will be picked up by the slightly sticky surface of the PTR. A soft, antistatic brush (e.g., Kinetronics, Staticmaster) also works well to remove loose dust.

I've never really had a problem with slides needing to be cleaned. Is the person changing the slides touching the picture area? I've heard of this before, as someone months back used FG to clean some slides in plastic mounts, but I don't see how the edges of the frame could be easily cleaned without removing the strip of film. I would think to clean them with a PTR would be the same thing and require removing the film from the slide mount. The Kinetronics brush may be the easiest method.

In my experience, the thick soft polyurethane of the PTR is able to penetrate and contact most of the film area in cardboard or thin-plastic slide mounts (e.g., Wess Mount). So although you won't remove a piece of dust at the very edge of the image, it will clean most of the slide very effectively.

Another idea would be to use a relatively low-stick low residue adhesive tape (e.g, ScotchMark Paper Tape #256 or architect's tape)to carefully pull the dust off the slide.

Slides are not my specialty.

How much does the thickness of the different slide mounts vary? The ones I'm used to dealing with are fairly thick and I can't see how a PTR could actually come into contact with the film.

Slide mounts vary quite a bit. The cardboard mounts are quite thin, but some plastic mounts can be about 2 mm thick. So the PTR would need to "penetrate" only about 1 mm, which it can with a bit of pressure. Use of low-stick tape, a soft antistatic brush, or even a jet of air are also options to remove loose dirt.

Thanks for all the replys. Do not have a PTR. Will try the tape, when I get it. Also, would only use the Film Guard to clean the gunk off the slides. Wouldn't necessarily need to keep a film of FG on the slide, mostly want to clean off the spots of dirt. The slides stay in the projector for one year, due to a yearly contract. We do not change any slides during the year.

You will have to wait untill tonight when I come back from work to find out where they are from. (I am thinking MN or IA) I will try to remember to look and let you know.

It IS depressing... I took over in July again but have to look at the old managers face untill Feb when they change out slides.

By the way, what is "normal" for other slide companies?

I think anyone who has NCN gets theirs changed weekly. Not all the slides, but any that are outdated or their contract expired get changed as needed.

At least that's what they do at the AMC's here in Kansas City. While I was their I was constantly annoyed by the 'slide lady.' She was rude, and complained if I didn't have atleast 24 extra slide projector bulbs.

Hi again. Took me long enought to get back. Unique Screen Ads, are all over the US, I am told. The one I work with is out of St. Cloud, MN Ph 1-800-358-1818 I did not ask if the contract length is the same all over so you will have to ask them. I have only had problems once with the projectors and they got right back to me on a weekend, so good news there. Time to go scope something out before it goes flat on me
