We are having a special event tonight at the Rialto. We are presenting a selection of videos from Mountainfilm.The fellow gets here and we plug up all the equipment and the Sony UVW1200 Beta Cam SP comes back with an ERROR 21-1C1! We try a little of this and a little of that. We call the Sony 24 hour support line and no luck. The unit is toast. We found another Beta Cam SP to rent in a town 50 miles away and he is off to secure that one.
So do any of you have any ideas? We think maybe they should pay to have the program transfered to DVD. If the DVD breaks you just go to Best Buy and get another one.

By the way.Error 21-1C1 indicates that the transport mechinism has timed out and can't play the tape. Then it ejects the tape. I pulled the cover and noticed that the tape wasn't loading completely.
Thus ends my knowledge of the tape deck.

Yes, but DVD also has nasty compression artifacts; IMHO, Betacam looks _much_ better. And wouldn't it be cheaper just to rent a backup Betacam SP deck?
(I never would have guessed that it would be hard to rent one of these on short notice; I thought it was a pretty common piece of broadcast gear.)

That and getting a DVD mastered, especially a small unit count on short notice, is a BIG deal. Most authoring/mastering houses doing high quality work are booked weeks in advance. And pressing plants, well...Scott's right. BetaSP and/or DigiBeta playback gear should be readily available at any decent AV or broadcast production rental house. You'd have a backup for those secured way before you'd be able to get a professional-quality DVD burned.

Betacam SP is definitely better. It replaced 3/4" for most of the broadcast industry. Although even betacam is now getting replaced by digital video tape, it should be very easy to get another deck on short notice (shouldn't have problems for awhile, being they still are available new, unlike 3/4").Steven Gorsky
