I know Oscar is out there, and I have a question: I have six Smart sound racks, and four of them have either MN520 or EX500 monitors. The volume knobs on these monitors drive me crazy-they can be turned all the way down and blast out of the monitor at start up. Either that or turning the knobs will get me no monitored sound at all. I assume I'll need some tuner cleaner or something like that, but I'm not going to mess with them until I hear from one of the experts.

The pot used is a Mouser part and has an open area by the solder tabs. I usually spray some cleaner in there.
Also some were assembled with solid wire loops from the pcb to the pot and the solder connections went south

Sounds like dirty pots to me too. As far as usig a cleaner us one such as DeOxit that leaves a lubricant behind, NOT one of the cleaners that just clean without residue, as thy will dissolve all the remaining greasein the opt and soon after your pots will freeze, requiring replacement.

Yes, that's what you need to do is spray the pots out with cleaner. I use M.G. Chemicals' "NU-TROL Control Cleaner & Lubricant" # 401B-140g

It's good stuff, I use it at the drive-in to spray the pots on the in-car speakers.

Welcome to the club, Tom. I just replace them. I tried cleaning them, and is not worth the hassle, as they will start doing it again very shortly after that.
