In the Smart EX decoder, the inphase data in the rear surrounds is sent to the center surround output, thus creating an extra rear channel. I'm wondering if DTS ES follows the same method. Specifically, that the rear center info is matrixed into the rear surrounds. Is that correct? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

THe Ex matrix for encodeing and decoding is the same as the standard 4:2:4 matrix for the centre channel
If it is inphase and equall level it is the centre channel
on a ex is the Ls and Rs are equal in phase and level it is the Rear surround

Thanks, Gordon. I know that 5.1 DD EX and 5.1 DTS ES are both sent to the rear surrounds in the same way in 5.1 mixes for DVD's. I know that cinema DTS is handled differently than the home version. I was wondering if that extended to the handling of the rear center channel for "ES".Here's what I'm wondering: Could I take the L/R rear surround output of the DTS-6D and connect that to a Smart unit and get "EX" type dematrixing with DTS that I get with DD. If the rear center info for DTS ES is matrixed inphase into the rear surrounds a la DD EX, then the answer is yes.
I didn't think I would have stumped you guys on this! 
I will email Karen Hultgren at DTS and Oscar at Smart to find out the definitive answer.

In DTS-ES (EX is Dolby's) for cinema, it is done the same as Dolby = 2 (right, left) surrounds matrixed to produce 3 (right, left, rear).We have DTS-ES for consumers (DVD) which has is a true discrete rear surround channel as well as the "standard 6" (left, center, right, left surround, right surround, sub).
