Does anybody know if it is possible to convert old Motigraph soundheads to Reverse scan pickup? If so, where can I get them and how much do they usually run per head? Thanks.

I am afraid to the best of my knowlege,at this time no one is making a reverse scan conversion that will fit the Motio SH-7500
There are several problems in the physical design of the Motio that will make a reverse scan unit difficult to make as well as install, #1] The way the LED would have to mount, there is too little room for a decent array, #2] There is no way to install a pick-up assy with lens & circuit board the way the exciter lamp compartment is designed.
The only option presently available is the JAX-LITE from Ultra Stereo. I would suggest upgrading soundheads, as the Motios are getting expensive as far as parts go and their stability is nominal, and they are famous for the sound flywheel 'drying out' inside thus resulting in excessive wow & flutter.------------------

You don't want that flywheel to dry out and get to the point that it begins dragging. It will cause scratches on the film. The jaxlites are a good option. Be aware you may have to do some grounding to the exciter supply, do to hum in the sound. You do not have this problem with reverse scans since they usualy use there own power supply. Also if you have an lED failure you can replace the jaxlight and have the show back on screen. You can't do that with reverse scan. Unless you have digital capability you are screwed until you can replace the lED. I have already experienced this with the prototype Component Engeneering unit that I am using. We have DTS in that auditorium so I could keep the shows going.

I forgot to mention that it is difficult to install the JAX LITE too! You will have to grind the casting out where the exciter drops into the socket to clear the JAX LITE base, (This is also true for the Century R-2 & R-6 soundheads) But, the JAX LITE will perform great! And watch the ground wires as darryl mentioned! You may have to attach both ends of the foils shield drain wire on you cell cable to eliminate hum! It takes a little experimentation depending on your processor.------------------

The JAXLIGHT is made by Ultra Stereo Labs. Information is on their website:

Although JAXLIGHTS do use red LEDs, and so will be compatible with cyan dye tracks, they do not have all the advantages of upgrading to a complete reverse scan red LED reader. Efficient noise reduction (e.g., Dolby SR) is still needed too.

Indeed, Kelmar does make a retrofit reverse scan for the Motiograph. I can't remember the Part number off the top of my head as its too early in the morning and I'm not in the office today to look it up.
I have installed and sold quite a few of them and they work great and are as easy as a regular scanner to install. If you check out the pictures of Century Cinema 5 on our web site, you will see a 5 plex full of Motiographs. These all have the Kelmar reverse scan kits in them. They are not always available "off the shelf" from them but they always have delivered them in a decent time frame. Call or e-mail me and I will be glad to give you and any Film-Techer here a cost plus price on these and any other fine product we handle.
My advice is to stay away from the JAX LIGHT. They are expensive, and there is very little to gain by using it as you are still stuck using a slit lens.

Component Engineering is on the verge of offering a model for the Motiograph. It will not be a quick and easy install as some of the lens mount assembly will have to be removed (meaning, sawed off). It will be a part of our lower cost family of conversion. As soon as it is ready I shall post a notice and pix here. Some of the key parts are right now at our plating company being anodized.------------------
