Have a look at http://www.folwell.umn.edu/gsd/Gradcon/screening.html and go and see some German 70mm (Not 65mm) originated material. Those are very rare to see.

Does this mean that the camera orginal negative was/is 70mm? I thought the Russians were the only ones who shot 70mm in the camera...

I don't know. My guess would be that all of the "Eastern Bloc" countries would have used the Soviet production standards, and either Orwo or SovColor film, although Kodak did sell some film for the higher budget productions.

At http://hjem.get2net.dk/in70mm/magazine/articles/formater/defa70.htm on my web site, Mr. Ingolf Vonau has written an article regarding DEFA 70, the DDR 70mm/70mm format. It's a preview of the article he is going to do in the future.

The DDR format was 70mm in the camera.

Of course, Comrade Pytlak, we both know SovColor monopack is far superior to Kodak, since we invent first. To prove, we will tell each other exactly how our film is made, da? It will be like child's game..... Oh, this bottle of vodka is open! You know what they say about opened vodka..... Here is big glass for you. Most good, yes? Now, please, you first; minor details like chemical compositions, slitting and perfing speeds....

Being both a 70mm and science-fiction fan, it would be interesting to see "Signale"- unfortunately, Minnisota is a bit too far away for me to travel!

I tried to look up the film in the IMDB. It was listed, but without any review. In the IMDB, it's listed as; "Signale - Ein Weltraumabenteuer." I did find a review at: http://www.folwell.umn.edu/gsd/Gradcon/signals.html

The films are great, and the 70 mm versions have fantastastic, rich, unfaded colors. Theyare among the best 70 mm colors I haveever seen. Sound is dynamic and the synphonic orchestra superbly recorded. Filmmaking at it's best, even with the films that have socialist themes.
GDR had their own camera, own processing laboratory, and own projector, the UP 700 multiformat machine. Ingolf Vonau knows a lot on the theme, and if someone is interested it is possible to make the contact.
Rumorssay, some interneg was Kodak...

The Minnesota screenings are 35 mm mono sound, Bradford's "Signale" will be 70mm 6 track.
Still, for you in the US it's one of the rare chances to see theese films.

Dick - hope that you do not mean that it will only be Yorkshire's Tetley in Bradford to drink at the Film Festival?.

I ran 2010 in 70mm.. still remember the crispy sound of the triangle during the opening credits...

I'm not directly involved with the Moscow or Shanghai theatres, but I understand they are very successful ventures that fill a real need for "Film Done Right" in their markets. With only five screens so far, I don't think anyone can say we have been overbuilding. It's QUALITY over QUANTITY.
