So I used to rund projectors in two small privately owned theaters in Northern VT, I know the basics (Threading, Building films, breaking them down, very basic maintinence). I now live in New York city and would love to continue running movie projectors and learning more about them. Come to find out in order to do this one must be a memeber of a Union. If any of you seasoned Verterens feel like giving a young rookie a hand, it would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is: Johnywow@aol.com

In New York City you will also have to be licensed by the City of New York. You can receive information from NATO of New York 244 West 49th Street, 10019.

Theatres in New York City with six screens or less do not have to employ a union projectionist. You can go to these theatres and speak to the on site management for direct information.

You might want to consider doing a reverse comute to New Jersey where most of the theatres use a mixture of union and non union help.

John, I would suggest that you pick up a copy of Reel People from Kodak and start studying. There is a world of information in that book, both technical and non-technicial. It would be a start. You might want to contact IATSE and see what their licenseing requirements are as well as the City of New York.

Learn all you can about projectors, how they work, and learn the nomenclature of the various parts, and their purpose. I would presume in New York, you have to be a true professional in the craft to obtain a license.

This would be a good start for you, but don't expect things to happen over night. It will take time.

this may seem odd, but what does IATSE stand for. I was thinking about calling them in order to ask for teh information you suggested but I realized I was trepedacious about calling an acronym that I didn't know. Sorry if I'm ignorant.
