Hey what about me? I was mentioned twice in the European version of "Film Notes"! That makes me kind of cool, I guess. Maybe not as cool as Scott and Ken, but at least they may still let me hang around with them without snubbing me. Maybe.

Its great to see this site, and Brad's efforts recognized. He has truly poured quite a bit into making this site. As so have Scott, Ken, John, and many others.

I wish more companies would recognize that the participation on this site is an asset and not a liability.

It is a cool article! I remember when Brad posted a simple message on rec.arts.movies.tech saying 'check it out' only a few years ago. Now, between the forums and those handy manual download (no more hauling stacks of manuals around, thank you, thank you!!) Film-Tech is hard to live without.

There was one error, though: A poor product review is not called "Bad News"
I think it's real name is much better!

I think that was an intentional error. Remember, Kodak Cinema Notes is G-rated. I don't think they are going to print something like "This Blows" in their publication. Hmmm... maybe we should review Kodak Cinema Notes? I don't think it blows.

Joe -- you may be onto something. Maybe someone here should review some of these publications. We know about Cinema Notes, since it's free, but I'd like to (for example) see something about the new SMPTE projectionist book. It's horribly expensive, but it is apparently quite good. There are other publications, too (Kodak and others have some freebies and some non-freebies on film care in general, for example), which might be useful to theatre owners/managers/employees, some of which are obscure enough or expensive enough that most of us would never see them unless they got a positive enough review here (or somewhere) to convince us to go out of our way to get them.

There are also some publications which might be of tangential interest to theatre employees. For example, Kodak also puts out a production-oriented thing called "In Camera," which is usually pretty interesting.

The SMPTE BKSTS manual is not expensive
I just picked up my latest IC master handbook and it was 200.00
For technical publications SMPTE is cheap

I just read the article and was disappointed that DTS was not mentioned as participating in this forum. I saw that Dolby was. I've never seen a Dolby rep here, is there one?

Hmmm... maybe a public list should be kept of all the companies who participate on the Film-Tech forums. That way people can see at a glance who is here, and other companies won't feel so risky about joining in.

I think there has been about 3 posts by Dolby. I personally don't remember who the rep was, though. I could be way off on this one.

Karen: Please don't feel slighted. I think Jamie Powell's interview with Brad was done over the phone, so DTS may have inadvertently not been transcribed. We all appreciate you being here to help people achieve the best possible performance from DTS.

I recall that several Dolby people continue to participate, as well as several folks from Lucasfilm THX.

In the interview I actually did mention you as the DTS rep and John F. Allen of HPS-4000 as well as other companies and various engineers...but that list was a bit on the lengthy side. I'm sure that either I rattled it off too fast or it was too lengthy to "read well" in print and was edited so it would flow nicely. (It was a phone interview.) Regardless, we're all happy you are here as well as the other people who didn't get written into the article.
