Question, one of our hour meters is broken, I have a new one but don't know how to install it. How do I install it?

Power down the lamphouse at the breaker panel.

On the rear of the lamphouse,unscrew the 4 8-32 screws that secure the bright metal panel (the one with the meter and power /auto switches on it).

Gently work the panel away from the back of the lamp until you can get at the hour meter.

Unscrew the three screws and nuts that hold the meter to this panel.

The wiring should unplug, but if it is like everyone I've ever done, the plastic insulators over the tabs will probably shatter in your hand.

Install the new meter, and solder and tape the leads.

Now re-install the back panel and look into the lamphouse to confirm that the wiring is not in too close proximity to the ignitor. (Best to use black tie-wraps to secure it with the rest of the bundle going to the terminal strip at the floor of the lamphouse.

Remember to record the number of the old meter if you are not changing the bulb at this time.

Is it nescessary to solder the wire (that is, if the plugs don't shatter?

The old meter has read 29999 for the past 4 months.

If the wire plugs pull off the meter without damage, they can be reused. Replace them or use solder if there is metal fatigue on the plugs. The insulation should definitely be replaced, since it probably is brittle from the heat. Instead of electrical tape, would heat-shrink tubing insulation be okay in this application?

Make your best guess as to number of hours from your last entry in the maintenance logbook. (You DO keep a written maintenance log, don't you? ) If uncertain, be especially watchful for any signs of lamp failure if you don't know the number of hours it has.

Ah, perhaps I was unclear, the new meter has new wires with it. This shold be a piece of cake. Thanks for the help

John P.: The bulb currently in there was a used bulb from another location (closed) with unkown hours. I have been watching it closely but so far no signs of failure.

Yeah, heat shrink is great, provided you remember to slip it on one of the wires BEFORE you solder them together. Have learned a whole new language using that stuff.
