Cost aside, would it not be possible to come up with a method of producing print-stock where the emulsion would be sandwiched between two layers of dirt/scratch resistant base material?

Kodak VISION Color Print Film is quite scratch resistant. The back side is ESTAR Base, featuring a Kodak-proprietary electrically conductive antistatic layer, a scratch-resistant backing layer, and a process-surviving backside lubricant. The emulsion side of print film has a protective gelatin overcoat. Putting an impervious coating over the unprocessed emulsion is not possible, as it would prevent the processing chemicals from reaching the emulsion layers.

There are post-process treatments like 3M ScotchGard Protective Film Coating that can be coated on the film after processing, then cured to a hard polymer with ultraviolet light. Dacar Products makes a similar product known as ImageGard.

Are studios warming up to these film stocks or are they balking at them? Much as I like to think my booth is totally perfect,

Kodak VISION Color Print Films are by far the most popular and widely used print films. VISION prints are much more resistant to scratches and abrasion, and do not attract dirt with static charge like some other films do. Projectionists are much less likely to get unpleasant shocks from static buildup during high speed winding, and "static cling" has been greatly reduced.
