What soundtracks are usually found on new 70mm film prints?

70mm theatrical (5-perf) prints originally had 6 channels of sound, recorded on magnetic strips applied to the film after processing. Because of the cost of meeting ever increasing environmental restrictions on the solvents used for striping, most of the companies that did striping no longer offer the service.

Recently, DTS has been used successfully for 70mm prints on several features, most notably "Titanic" and "Vertigo". The DTS time code is printed along the edge of the film, and the same disks used for 35mm prints are used.

The last 5/70mm mag prints that were released theatrically were Kenneth Branaugh's 'Hamlet', a couple of 70mm mag prints of 2001:A Space Odyssey were made in 1995(?), and a single 70mm Mag print of 'Tron' was struck in 1999 for a film festival and a couple of special screenings.

All other 5/70mm prints since 1995 have been DTS70 prints, and all of them (except for 'Titanic' and 'Vertigo') were one-off prints for special European venues.

There is (was?) a 1999 70mm mag print of "Lawrence of Arabia" as well. I've seen it twice...physical condition is great, but there are serious timing problems.

The recent 2001 re-release of "2001: A Space Odyssey" is also Dolby SR 6-track magnetic. It's still running in England.
