My theatre is pretty old. We do not have a Kelmar table, and I doubt we will get one. We have one of those Teco rewinders bolted to the workbench. But the workbench is so old and beat up. I can't imagine that working with film on a workbench who's paint is chipping and has splinters sticking out can be good for the film. My GM does not like to spend money when he doesn't think it's necessary. How can I convince him that we should strip, sand, and seal the workbench? (Or do you guys have a better suggestion? I'd love a Kelmar table, but it's not gonna happen.)

Check in an art store for drafting table covers. There is a paper type that is wet and stretched into place, and a vinyl type that is quite thick and strong. A fabric store will have "oilcloth" which can serve the same purpose.The advantage of these solutions is that they are removable and replacable, as well as being cheap.

Or you could go to an office supply store and purchase one of those desk mats and lay it on top of your table.
