has anyone else experienced problems with the Shallow Hal Soundtrack not syncing with the movie? I've had this problem on both my Digital and Stereo Soundtracks, and in multiple houses so I'm pretty sure it's not Hardware that's the problem...

Is the sync problem on one reel, or all reels? A sound recording or lab problem would likely affect only one reel of the feature. If the sync seems to drift from scene to scene, it goes back to editing or ADR. If the entire feature is out of sync in the same way, look to your equipment (offsets) or threading procedures (e.g., loop sizes).

What digital system; DTS or Dolby? Is syncing the only problem? Are you using one of those "roll-around" racks (to share a digital system between multiple screen?) Could the digital offset delay be different for each and someone forgot to set it for the auditourium you're using now?

Yes, We have been having some problems with the sync in I think it is reel #1 or #2....I think it only lasts a few seconds when it does it....It is running DTS.....Have not noticed if it goes out in the analog though....

I have had some problems...reels 1 and 2 mostly....in SRD. It must be in editing since a lot of the sync problems occur in the same scene...Jack Black will say something in sync, and then Paltrow will say something in responce way out of sync.

The A can be considered as Added or Additional Dialauge Recording...ADR....it is used do to all the noise that is picked up by the on set mikes....The actors are in a recording booth as the scene they are in is projected. They then record their dialauge word for word with expresion of emotion to match the scenes....

Yes, there are print problems with SHALLOW HAL, the studio is aware of the problem. Please call the film distribuator and request a new print.

as mentioned it's mostly in the first two reels that we've noticed.
As far as the digital goes, it ran in 2 auditoriums both with Dolby Digital. I received two new sets of DTS discs today, even though I only have one print.

We received new discs today. Automatically. Didn't even have to ask for 'em. Don't know if it works or not because that print is now in a house that does not have DTS.

Just a further note on ADR, it is also commonly used to add the dialogue in wide shots where lip sync is not apparent. Because a boom mic or fishpole would be in the shot, the only alternative is to use lapel mics which sound just awful at the best of times, so it is an easy matter and preferrable to record the dialogue later.

R1 and R2 of Shallow Hal are out of sync. R1 of Sexy Beast (US version) was out of sync. Do I surmise there is something strange in the Deluxe lab?

If all the sound formats are out of sync by the same amount on one reel, it's likely due to a printer threadup issue, where the sound negative and picture negative were threaded with the incorrect offset. I would not blame it on a particular lab, as it is mostly dependent upon the printer operator, such that it could happen at any lab. I'm sure the lab will take corrective action.

DTS did issue a new disk for that movie. If you have a red disk, a blue disk is supposed to replace it. DTS invited us to throw the red disk in the trash can.

We used the blue discs and still got an out-of-sync complaint. (For a very brief period, around the time Hal and Tony Robbins are in the elevator.) Didn't have time to try the original red discs; print already shipped out. Apparently the optical track also had problems, but I don't know if it was the same place as the DTS.

Yep, same thing running print 140 last night in SRD. I guess they've just shipped all the dodgy prints over to us lucky punks in the UK then

As I noted before, if the sync seems to drift in and out during a reel, there may have been a problem in the sound editing process. A lab or theatre problem would result in a constant offset throughout a reel.
