Howdy guys,

has anyone got any helpfull advice as to which side of the filter faces the bulb? The manual is useless.

inserting the filter, striking the xenon and holding ones hand in the the light beam post filter and determing if the filter is orientated right, while it might be totally accurate (3kw does get hot), but isn't as fast as being armed with the knowledge as to which side the film coating goes.

Pretty sure the film coating goes on the lens side.

Generally with an dichroic IR heat filter the coating is towards the bulb so it can reflect heat back at an angle to some heat sink surface. This position is so that the heat does not have to travel through the glass.

The coated side points back towards the bulb/exhaust.

Kinoton recently changed their heat filter scheme for all but the largest of lamps on their standard heads...the new filters are smaller and actually mount to the rear heat-shield in the shutter housing. Previously, the heat filter was much larger and mounted in the lamphouse just before the douser. Depending on which model projector one is using the Universal Lamphouse, the filter will still be mounted in the lamphouse.

I have worked on FP 30ST's not on FP 50D's but would think all Kinoton filters are basically the same in that the Dichroic coating will always face the lamp so that the heat is reflected into the lamphouse and exhausted out thorough the fan system.

I agree --- the side with the dichroic coating TOWARD the lamp, reflecting the IR to a heatsink.
