In doing second run you get to see everybody elses troubles. In the last several months just about the only completely undamaged prints I've received are ones that have not been run on platters, as indicated by reel labeling on the first and fourth reels etc. While equipment is probably OK apparently there are just too many things to get done correctly for the average dufus in the mpx booth to remember or give a damn to do, check or report defective before walking away. I don't blame Technicolor or ETS for not inspecting as they are not in most cases paid by the owners of the film to do it. I am just pissed off because I am having to get several prints to get a good one. The record so far is 5. There seem to be operators but no projectionists.

I agree with your assessment 100%.What I find amazing is that you know that these prints have to look this way for a least a good part of the first run engagements. And yet it seems that people are willing to pay $7.00 to $8.50 rather than wait for the second run.

The studios are really helping the demise of second-run with the speeded-up DVDs and video releases. A new film has "buzz" for a while, but a three month-old film that will be released on DVD in another month just doesn't draw people into theaters.------------------
