I recently received new photos for this theater, using unusual optics to distribute an image to 120 back-projected drive-in screens. This theater was built in 1973, so instead of using platters they used a tower with reels side by side.

Man, is that wierd or what! Could this have been an early attempt at a Stealth Drive In? I wonder if Kids clipped the screens out and stole them along with the ramp speakers??? Imagine a lens cleaning and alignment session out there some night to get rid of all the dead bugs. Any bug or mosquito landing on one of the lenses would instantly take the viewer at that position directly into a B rated monster flick. It could take weeks to get the alignment of all the lenses and mirrors just right. This has got to be an idea lifted from a Rod Serling Twighlite Zone Episode. Just imagine that they(who ever they were) are in control of your lens and mirror positioning instead of the horizontal hold.......
That looks like a Lee Artoe big reel transport system in the photo. He used to call it Artoemation. One thing is for sure, JOE AND BRAD HAVE GOT TO MAKE A VIDEO OF THIS PLACE called "Interlocking Part 2" Directed by Steve Guttag. Its time this place got 120 seperate 35mm projectors and Steve be subjected to this many platter systems at once.
I know this place is gong to be in my nightmare I'm now expecting to have tonight!

Don't suppose anyone was smart enough to save one of those fly's eye lenses, there'd be an interesting curio to show off at the office! Speaking of porn drive-in's, there's rumoured to be one left in operation, the "Apachie" in Tyler TX. No idea what they might be running, maybe some sort of video I guess. Anyone want to go and - er - confirm that?

I finally was able to get into Geocities page and have placed the pictures on the Film-Tech server for archival use. They can be viewed here .

What crazy loon came up with that!!! And some of you said I was crazy with my interlocking. Compared to this, I don't think so.

What size xenon was in that lamphouse? Has anyone here ever been to one of these theaters? Does anyone know if one of the techs who has ever set one of those things up is still around? Perhaps even just someone who has had to go in and re-align those mirrors? This certainly beats out AMC's record of 30 screens!

Anyone else notice the odd similarity between Fritz the Cat and Front Row Joe?

LOL! I sometimes wondered how those circular drive-ins worked.

If I were at one, I'd have a great temptation to lob a rock at the mushroom canopy. A good thwack would have probably jiggled all the pictures.

I'm a little surprised that there was only one row of screens. I would have thought two rows would be possible at least. The wasted space around the center makes this a design that couldn't work in areas with a higher land value.


I wonder what the light output to each screen was. Looks like there might have been 100 3' x 5' screens = 1500 sf. That equals a 25' x 60' regular screen, but over 1/2 the light output is lost in the grid that holds the little lenses. I'd guess maybe 1/3 of the light output made it to the screens.

Rear screen projection involves losses as well, depending upon the screen material. I'd guess 1/2 the light would be lost to back scatter unless those screens were fresnel lenses.

I can't imagine the pictures being anything but dim.

For those bypassing my limited bandwitdh page, the pictures are by Jeff Anderson, submitted by Bruce Humphrey. Bruce will soon be asking Jeff for more information about the photos and I will post updates here. The theater opened in 1973 for maybe just a few years and had 120 screens.

A film tower similar to the one at the Tri-Circle can be seen at Cinematour's Highway 65 Drive-In page, another Autoscope theater.

Gordon- So THAT'S what the huge warehouse-type building (that the conventional screens are now attached to) was for at the "5" in Oakville! Wonder why they did it? I suspect the inner-workings have given way to storage, it would be fun to go in and look at. Gee, you could close the outdoor in the winter, put up an opaque covering
over the rear-projection screen and run an indoor all winter! But to my main post, all you ever wanted to know about the Autoscope:

There are a number of great books on Drive-In's, the best technical resource is Kerry Segrave's: "Drive-In Theaters: A History From Their Inception in 1933". Chapter 10 is titled "Strange Drive-Ins", the below excerpted starting in paragraph 3.

Almost always the trend in drive-ins was to bigger and bigger, but not quite always. Tom Smith was a theater owner in Urbana, Missouri, during the early 1950s. An advocate of the even then not new technique of rear-projection, Smith spent two years tinkering until 1953, when he displayed his Multiscope Drive-In working model. This system had small screens placed around the perimeter of a circle with one car in front of each screen. In the
center of the circle sat the projection booth, which back-projected the film onto each screen. How one projector put the identical image on any number of screens was a secret that Smith would not reveal. According to the inventor a full circle would be 600 feet in diameter, which would allow space for one hundred fifty to two hundred cars. Tom's working model used 270 feet of the circle, accommodating forty-two cars. Each 30-by-40-inch plastic screen, with
a wide black masking border, was recessed slighty into a wooden frame. With those measurements the diagonal of the screen was around fifty inches, smaller than many of today's big-screen home television sets.

Smith was unsure of the cost of his invention to a prospective purchaser as he had built the entire model by hand out of wood. However, he felt the savings with his Multiscope system would be great, as ramping costs and screen-tower costs were eliminated. As well, the projector used much less power to produce a picture Smith claimed was better than that found at a standard-size ozoner. The relatively small number of cars it held would be just right for
small towns and remote rural areas, thought the investor. "You could say it's rather crude, but there is no denying that the result is comparable with the best of front-projection, indoors and out," said Tom. "I don't think we'll make a million dollars out of this brain-child, but I do think we've got something here."

This rather bizarre attmept to miniaturize the drive-in didn't end there, although Tom Smith's name would not resurface. [ed note: Although, it does in the Sanders book, with "co-inventor"
Bert Crowley in Albequerque NM in '63.] Ten years after Smith unveiled his model the Autoscope Drive-In appeared in Albequerque, New Mexico. In this incarnation 260 screens for individual cars
were provided in a series of rows. [ed note: The picture which won't scan very well but is on page 101 of the Segrave book, shows this theater's layout to be similar to a regular drive-in, tiered parking
in a "fan" layout, projector must be at the front where the screen tower usually is.] One central projector conveyed the image to all screens at once by means of a series of mirrors. Each screen
was 3 by 5 feet, a diagonal of about seventy inches. Albequerque reportedly had two of these Autoscopes operating in 1963. The idea didn't catch on, and they quickly died out.

Ten years after the Autoscope, we were back to a very Smith-like ozoner, in Richland Washington. The Smith patent, if he had one, would by then have expired, putting the technology behind it
into the public domain. Lloyd Honey of that city already owned a couple of standard-size drive-ins in the area when he opened a miniature one on May 30, 1973. It was circular in shape, with 120 individual screens each of which was 3 by 4 feet, a sixty-inch diagonal. The projection booth was located in the center of the circle, 165 feet from the viewing area. Using 120 lenses and
reflecting mirrors, the image was back-projected to all the screens. Sound was picked up on the car radios. Honey said that this theater - built at a cost of $70,000 - needed just two people to operate it. While not designed specifically for X-rated films, this new theater "could very well show them," Honey conceded. He claimed that it was the "first of its kind on the West Coast." It was also the last.

Companies name was United States TRAD (Theatre Research and Development)

I recall that we discussed these in the "Drive-In Discussion" and it was felt that a couple of these were still open into the 80's, one perhaps into the 90's (Missouri???).

The nearby freeway (I-182) was either built or widened in 1976-79, so I'm guessing the theater ceased operations then.

Theatrical porn wasn't going to last much past 1980 anyway, and this theater wasn't well suited for showing anything else but!

I recall reading that the original Autoscope in Albequerque used a single XL projector with 10,000 ft. reels. They had two Strong Mighty Nineties facing each other and at right angles to the projector. They used a mirror to switch from one lamp to the other when they ran out of carbon.

I'm still puzzled by the optics. If that was a regular lens in the projector whose image is reflected upwards to the plate with the many small lenses wouldn't each small lens be "seeing" just a portion of the picture? Obviously there must be more to it.

My guess would be that each small lens was looking at an aerial image formed by the main lens, in an aerial image beamsplitter arrangement:

Steve and John, I don't understand why you think there was a primary lens?

The cone of light going through film from the reflector not only forms a cone of light within the lamphouse and throat, it forms another cone of illumination on the opposite side of the film plane.
Note the position of the lenses in the photographs. They all fall within this cone.

It doesn't matter whether a lens is placed 3" from the film plane or 3', provided the focal length is correct, the lens will form an image that will be focused at a given distance. If that lens is within the cone of illumination it will probably form a bright enough image to comfortably view. There is no reason why more than one lens can't be placed to form images. In a theatre, we are used to one lens, partly because of the setup, and partly because multiple large lenses close to the film plane would be at an unacceptable angle to the film.

I'm fairly sure that each of the small long focal length lenses "sees" the small frame illuminated within the gate without the use of additional optics. Remember we're talking about making small images on small screens.

My original LOL! comment was because of the simplicity of the whole setup.

Jerry, you may be on to something. The problem I have with the aerial image is that I don't think the little lenses would pick up the entire image, only a portion. An aerial image is in focus at a point in air. But beyond that point the light rays are just diverging.

I recall playing with the concept of aerial images with a 16mm portable machine. I focused the regular lens so closely (lens forward almost out of its mount) that the image was only a bit larger than the film frame. Move the temporary focusing object out of the way and hand holding another lens in front (just as far from the aerial focal plane--an inch or two--as the 2nd lens would normally be from a film plane to focus on the wall a few feet away). This would project a normal image (perhaps upside down; I've forgotten). As I recall, the key to this totally pointless exercise was that the aerial image was small enough to get picked up by the 2nd lens (which was just another 16mm projector lens) without vignetting. If I refocused the 1st lens so the in-focus aerial image was larger, I could still pick it up with the 2nd lens but only a portion of it, not the whole picture.

How that applies here is that if there is an aerial image at some small distance below the cluster of small lenses, the small lenses would only pick up tiny segments of the picture. Looked at another way, if I focus a projector to produce picture about a foot or two across and then take the screen away, at any point at the screen level an observer can only see the light directed at that point, not the entire image. There will be a cone of light converging to that spot from across the width of the lens but originating from tranmission through a single point on the film.

Just to update this thread, since I missed it originally.

Jerry and Steve are right. There is/was no "primary" lens in an Autoscope theatre. The lens holder in the projector is empty, and the little lenses (they looked exactly like plastic "Give-A-Show" toy projector lenses to me) were located about 18 inches in front of the projector head. In the installation I saw at Channelview, TX, the lens bank was between the projector and the 45 deg. mirror -- just the opposite of the one in this picture -- although that wouldn't really matter, save for it being easier to adjust focus.

It was quite an amazing sight to see.

I, too, agree with Brad. This "drive-in" fasinates me. I kind of got the general idea though, that a lot of people thought this theatre wasn't that great.

Were these manufactured by the same AutoScope Corporation that manufactures commercial telescope equipment?

I was lucky enough to see that one in operation, but I was only five years old at the time. What I remember most is that the screen wasn't that bright.

I can't imagine that someone out there didn't buy the projection system and have it sitting in a barn somewhere.

Brad, that one down in Houston ran until about 1987, but I've heard it's just an empty field now. I saw it in '85, and it was about the coolest thing I'd ever seen. An outfit in MO "licensed" them. The TRAD Co., I believe it was called (Theatre Research and Development).

The projection system was just a standard 35mm projector with a large reel transport... nothing fancy, but the trick part was the mirror arrangement it projected into, up in that overhead dome. Wouldn't be too hard to make one, just time consuming getting it all adjusted. Needed a de-humidifier up there, too, to prevent fogging.

Most of the late Autoscope theatres were porn, because they couldn't show anamorphic pictures. They figured out a way to project scope in their last couple of years, but it was too late in the game.

There was an Autoscope drive-in in operation in Joplin, MO, in the mid 1970s. At that time, it was showing XXX. Picture quality was fair. It used a film transport in a blue cabinet that I don't remember the brand of. The projector and sound head were mounted at the front of the cabinet. It used a relatively small xenon lamphouse.

I don't know if any of its remains still exist.

P. S. UNI-CINEMA was the brand of the transport, I believe.

The mirror in front of the projector just reflects what it "sees" at the film plane, correcting the image. The small white lenses reverse the image, and the small mirrors correct the image. If this is true then a "corrected" image is sent to the small screens.
Being rear projected wouldn't the image be reverse?

Peter, you're missing a mirror. There are a couple of bounces in the dome.

John, that Joplin site was the prototype. The installation I saw used a unit called "The Box", made by American Film Transport in Jacksonville, Florida. It was a hideous thing, and the projector sit way up on top, about 1.5 x the height of a normal optical centerline (but not to satisfy any special Autoscope requirement, I should add).

Does anyone think that this could work now? Maybe as a very exclusive experience, that specializes as a restaurant?

The trend today is always "Bigger is Better", so claiming the new WHATEVER DRIVE-IN with 120 screens is NOW OPEN might be a great marketing campaign. You could even do two rings and add 1/3 more screens on the total (for a grand total of 280 screens).

What about using a 6kw bulb to brighten it up a bit, now that its common for that size of bulb to be used with 35mm?

Still, I'm sure there's no room whatsoever in the current market for this, but this sure is fascinating.

Ironic that it was called the AutoScope when scope films couldn't be run there. What was the reason that it couldn't show scope flicks, and what did they do to combat that issue?

Nahhh...

That thing had to be a monster to maintain... assuming they even tried.

Just the process of cleaning all those mirrors risked screwing up the alignment... which you wouldn't know about until you'd started & maybe had to move an unhappy patron.

And... I think we have bigger plasma screens now than what those things were. As far as Andrew's comment about maintaining proper ratio... hahahaha!!!

It was interesting... but just a novelty. Put it in the bucket with Fantasound.

Nah..Disney's "Fantasound" was the beginning of what we have now -stereo sound in our theatres.

We can't plop that in the bucket.

Granted, it was used only once, in a handful of roadshow presentations, and a huge undertaking in setting all of it up for 4 channel stereo sound that required two specially built, RCA optical sound dubber machines that played the specially printed 4-channel optical tracks - full film width on nitrate b/w 35mm stock - to run in sync with the projectors projecting the image, for the stereo playback.

If you know the history behind the how "Fantasound" began and was used, you'll understand and appreciate all of the work and effort that Walt and Stokowski (who himself was an audio specialist who loved to "tinker" with better sound. He did experimental stereo recordings in the early 30's for Bell Systems) put into that system...and all of this was before the 2nd World War.

Just too bad that it had to take almost 50yrs, when the restoration of "Fantasia" finalized in 1990 with the re-release of the film, presented in Dolby stereo and the full-frame 1.37/1 presentation that some of the theatres had to set their screens up at, to appreciate what Walt pioneered to what we have today.

Walt knew how to entertain the public.

A local theatre did go to the trouble to "restore" their system for that re-release of Fantasia. They never did quite get the hum out of the system (the owner wasn't too happy with it, either). Added to that: a nearby office building had their elevator retrofitted with a new SCR-(triac?)-based power supply, which made every sound system on the same power transformer buzz whenever someone used it.

3 $.10 capacitors fixed the problem.
