i recieved 4 gosford park trailers this week and all 4 were printed with the frame line off centre, so that when it comes on screen it is very low ( about half a sprocket! ).i am having to rack the image up to compensate.
i was wondering if any other aussie projectionist's have had the same problem ( printed by atlab ) ?.
is it correct in saying that the centre of the frame line should be dead centre between the sprocket's. in the case of gosford park it is noticably to one side than the other. i have notified the distributer and they are having it checked out.
by the way my trailer's are numbered 13 - 16.
thank's
brad

Standard SMPTE 195 specifies Projectable Image Area on 35mm prints. Yes, the image centerline is exactly BETWEEN two perfs. A SLIGHT vertical shift (0.005 inches) may occur when printing on a bi-directional printer, but being significantly off center should be investigated, as it could have occured during optical printing or digital compositing of the image.------------------

Brad The on we have here in Bradford is fine. Any idea where yours were printed.

i believe this issue would only affect australian trailer's (poss. n.z), as the trailer's were printed in aust. by atlab.
i checked with our other location and there's (they say) were fine and they seemed to think that i was imagining it, 9 year's experience and they still treat me like a baby.
thank's for your replies,
brad

now off to watch the final episode of ken burn's JAZZ!!

I saw the feature at City Screen York last Sunday and was surprised at how low contrast and grainy the print looked - either duped many times, or a S16 to 35 blow job, or originally shot on really fast stock. Some of the 'below stairs' scenes looked like they were shot in natural light so I guess that could have been the explanation. I was sitting near the front of the cinema and the grainy picture was really distracting at times. The titles were pin-sharp so it couldn't have been a problem with the print I saw.

Re: Gosford Park Print.
I'm sure it is a Super 35 blow up, read it some film mag somewhere.
P.S Leo, was the THX logo loud enough?! I'm sure if you where still with us it would be on Fader 7!
Darren.

Hi Brad,Yes, John Wilson and I at the Randwick Ritz have encountered the same thing - not with Gosford Park (we don't have it yet), but with many other titles. It's been an ongoing saga! It's a bit annoying to hear that they still haven't solved the problem. Even the direction is identical as ours were too far down on the screen also. As we have six screens, we cannot necessarily be there to frame up so John's solution was to return them to the distributor marked 'rejected'.
Some examples: Ice Age, From Hell, Ali, Bandits...there are others but that's all I can recall off the top of my head.
And yes, when he called up for the first time the distributor treated him with total disbelief too - as if he didn't know what he was talking about! Nice to hear that they treat everyone equally...
I think they actually said something like, 'No, I don't think it would be the lab's fault - they have very strict quality control there...' at which point John nearly dropped the phone...
I agree - Ken Burn's 'Jazz' doco is incredible!

thank's michael and john,
i'm still baffled as to why my trailer's were faulty and all the other location's trailer's (gosford park) were fine, i thought that they would have all been printed on the same run, does anyone have any possible reason's why?.
p.s. michael, is the randwick ritz an independant or are you with a major group like hoyt's?.
thank's again

Darren: The idea of Ivor Novello crooning away at the volume level I liked to play films at doesn't bear thinking about.Ahhh, those were the days: wind up the fader when the THX logo comes on and watch the buggers jump...

Brad asked: "i thought that they would have all been printed on the same run, does anyone have any possible reason's why?."If you returned the trailers as "defective" with an explanation, the lab and distributor should be able to investigate and find a solution to the problem.

We do get this problem in Carlton also Pearl & Dean advertising reels, but they are improving. I also use to complain bitterly about one frame TV cue dots at the beginning of almost every advert which most of us blacked out.
For years the 1.85 wide censor certificates in the UK on Buena Vista releases were always low in frame. I got something done about that, but only because I managed to persuade them to run reel 1 of a release print in their preview theatre to prove my point.
BTW my copy of Gosford Park trailer is dead centre frame. Technicolor print!

Hi BradTake a search in Film Handler's forum and look at the thread called...
Purple Line On Screen?
On page two you'll see some other examples. Atlab are looking into the problem, but until we made noises about it to both them and every distributor whose trailers were affected (almost everyone) they had no idea there even was a problem.
There's also a large amount of applicator bleed from the soundtrack you'll find sneaking into the image area on most of these.
The Ritz is an independent in Sydney's Eastern suburbs. 6 screens, Kinoton FP30d's, DTS and SRD in all screens, John White's fabulous Multimation automation system and of course, filmguard.
It just don't get any better...
Actually, if we were running Raiders Of The Lost Ark maybe...

I have a UK copy of the Gosford Park trailer sat on a shelf. I haven't looked at it or ran it though.

Danish "Gosford" prints were very grainy and washed-out.
Isn't this normal for the super-35 system - Trailers 1:85 just mint - and feature Scope - just sad.
"Gosford Park" is on the other hand so good a film, that you will have no time at all to think about the print - and a smashing dts track !p.

Not all Super35 films. But the original Super35 double system print of "Gosford Park" was alittle grainy to start with. I run alot of
Super35 here. "Gangs of New York" is Super35, the work prints looks
great.

Cinematographer Andrew Dunn wanted a low contrast "look" for Gosford Park, and chose a high speed, low contrast camera negative film:
