This past Friday night, when I saw "Rollerball" at Regal Hollywood 18 here in Huntsville, AL, in auditorium 2, everything seemed in frame, with everything centered properly, but I noticed that the Regal policy trailer had 6 inches to a foot of black all around it on the left, bottom, and right sides on the screen. It's as if the trailer were printed with a rather large "black margin" around it in the scope version. I've never noticed this on any other earlier versions of the "roller coaster" trailer before. Since no black area (or anything inappropriate) could be seen at the edges of any other image projected during the previews or movie, the problem seems to be with the policy trailer. Has anyone else here who works at a Regal theatre noticed this on your new Coke policy trailers?

Could it be that the trailer was produced in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, and the "scope" version is just printed with a matte around it? ------------------

I don't think so. If that were the case, there would have been much more black on the left and right sides (at least 3 or 4 feet on each side). We're talking 6 inches to a foot on each side (and on the bottom) on a 39.5 foot screen. It's as if it just didn't get enlarged quite enough when printed.
The other possibility is that the aperture was too large, but I doubt that since everything else looked fine, with no "image edges" visible anywhere.

In the new Coke roller-coaster trailer, the sound seems to be completely lacking in "punch". It has a very clean and wide-range digital sound to it, but there is no oomph behind those popping popcorn kernals like there used to be (especially the final BIG kernal). 
I don't think I've seen it played in scope though -- always flat.------------------

I bet the sound is mixed that way on purpose. That way, after the digital sound track starts degrading it will not be as obvious when the sound system starts popping in and out of digital. ;-)

The printing on the new policy trailers at regal are indeed shotty to say the least. The flats are fine, its the scope that has the problem as others have stated. Its is a matted frame but is very different than a scope trailer of a flat film(like that of spiderman on LOTR.
Its very wierd becase previous print runs on this have looked and sounded fine. It seems to me they screwed up in the framing of the image when compositing and compensated by the sharp matting on all four sides of the frame, thinking we see so many other formats mixed in with presentations that we would not notice. In any case they were done fast and loose, but thats the way big business is done.

Finally saw the scope version of the Regal policy today, in front of "We Were Soldiers". The image is indeed printed inside a black border on all 4 sides. The side borders were nowhere near as wide as they would be if the source was simply the flat version printed for scope. Kind of a combination of window-boxing and letterboxing.------------------

The UA "Odyssey" scope trailer is like that too, and it drove me nuts back when we were playing those. Josh pegged it right on the head though. They animated the trailer, then saw it projected in a theater that had excess cropping and panicked, thinking that if they black out the "safe area", none of that awesome computer animation would be lost.
