I use a CP 65 in my screening room.
Question is; What exactly does the Lt Rt preamp outputs on the top row do? I've experimented with these trying to get sound out of them but it doesn't seem to do anything.

They are connected to the optical preamplifier outputs. If you run a reference test film (like Cat. 69T Dolby tone) you should measure 388mV on each channel.They only have signal from the optical preamp.

What ever you do avoid turning the pots that say hf. This is for the high frequency slit loss adjustment and you need an analyzer hooked up to your processor to adjust this and a piece of test film with pink noise on it.

Yes they are a handy place to connect a tape machine to bootleg soundtracks 
and to feed into the manditory stereo synthesizer
