My SDDS heads have a hinge on the right side and look like they had doors on them at one point, is this something I should try to get back on the head? I know that the LED Jaxlights in the basement readers are really tempermental about ambient light, is the array on the SDDS head the same way? Could that be a cause of some of the many problems I have had in the past with my SDDS units?

The 2000 series of SDDS readers did have doors. As far as I know there are no problems with them being removed. Problems with SDDS seem to be one of the following: dirty reader, tension probelems, damage to the SDDS track, and led adjustment.Other forum members can tell you more.

I service many theatres using the DFP-2000 & leave the door open, or remove it, I never seen a problem with the reader except some minor adjustment or replacing the LED's....just keep the reader clean as usual...

It's just a cosmetic door. It is very flimsy, was made out of cheap plastic, is generally hard to latch closed and if you have a bounce coming from your platter (or reel) it can actually scratch the film on the underside of the top part of the door. Take them off and throw them away.
