Do you know if any DTS units have been returned to you for refurbishing to be resold. If so how much do these units cost.

There are B stock units that are from trade shows etc that are sold through their dealers at a lower cost in limited quantity

Since I know Karen is always good enough to answer DTS question and especially posts with DTS specifically in the subject, I will add my DTS question here also -- this is a first time I have ever seen this and am wondering what gives:

We just premiered a foreign film that opened the Brooklyn International Film Festival (low an behold and sad to day, half the roster is video). This 35mm feature film was OFF TO THE REVOLUTION, Italian with English subtitles (and no change-over cues), but the really odd thing was that with the credit crawl comes, big as day, the DTS logo -- in it's own space, in other words, it crawls up the screen alone (indicating that it is a major item). Kicker is, there's NO DTS code on the track. How does THAT happen? They chicken out of paying for the DTS license? But then how do they get to leave the logo in the credits?

And that actually leads to a second question: is the DTS code a separate negative from the analog track and printed in a separate pass or, more likely, is the DTS code and analog track married at some point to become a single sound negative. Are the other digital formats all on the same soundtrack negative?

Now the last question, I promise: Could you, in theory, get a print that is in pristine condition and etch a DTS code in the proper place using the same laser technology that they use to etch subtitles? Seems like a down and dirty way to go back to predigital prints and "retrofit" them with digital capability.

The 35mm DTS timecode is exposed onto the same sound negative as the other sound formats, so the lab usually just prints "one pass" with the picture negative and the sound negative going over separate heads in the printer.

For 70mm, AFAIK, the printers have only one head, so it it a two-pass operation. I believe the DTS timecode negatives for 70mm prints are still on 35mm film, but will transport over the 65mm/70mm printer sprockets with no problem.

Did the logo say "DTS Digital" or "DTS Stereo"?

Yes, we get used equipment in and refurbish them to current specs. We call is "B" stock and we supply them only to our dealers. Availablity varies. For more information and cost, please contact your DTS dealer.
