I've noticed lately that the majority of films are coming out looking washed out and grainy. I noticed Aaron Sisemore complaining about the look of SW:EP2 in the Reviews Forum, and it reminded me of my annoyance with this lately.

Changing Lanes, Murder by Numbers and yes, Star Wars: Episode II are all recent examples of movies that just looked grainy. Is this the latest style in filming? Soft focus? Different film-stock in production or exhibition? Or are more and more people using digital to film more parts their films lately?

Besides of films shooted in digital video there is a great amount of movies shooted in the f&$&$&$% Super 35 system and they are very grainy. Ali, Panic room, LOTR, Harry Potter, Black Hawk... Iīm not an expert but basically Super 35 is a way of getting a wide screen but without anamorphic lenses during the filmation. In the laboratory the film is blown up and deformed to be projected in scope ratio. In this process the 30% or so of the frame shooted at 1:1,33 ratio is unused so the definition decreases and the grain increases.

I hope Super 35 die....(at least in major productions)

Super 35 eh? Those movies you listed off are EXACTLY the problem I speak of... so it MUST be Super 35. Did Super 35 just become Hollywood's favorite? I mean -- where did it come from that it just became so prevalent right NOW?

Scott, I noticed that also. If you look closely at the credits, some of the letters are blotched together, just like a lousy television picture with no resolution.

Super 35 has been around for decades, it just has in the past 10 years become very popular to use as a shooting format (James Cameron is a big supporter of the format) as you can make 'scope' or flat (in almost any aspect ratio) prints from a S35 negative. it blows up to 70mm pretty well too.

Many S35 films actually DO look pretty good, I think the lab work and the shooting stocks play an important role in the final product's quality.

Seven is shooted with Super 35 and as far I can remenber it hasnīt so many grain but all the film was very dark. Maybe the laboratory may improve the quality of a Super 35 print but after all is a blow up and always is gonna be worse than an anamorphic print.
IMHO the Super 35 is a format for low budget movies but in major films has to be forbbiden.
One of the explanation of itīs use is that a Super 35 film is easier to light than a Scope film (anamorphic lenses need a lot of light to obtain a good picture so Super 35 means a lazy cinematographer).

I canīt imagine why the academy awarded LOTR in best cinematography or any other title filmed with Super 35.

Super35 (grain-O-ramma) is just beefed up techniscope with out the direct to matrix printing that helped them hide the smaller neg area

I think many of the films that you guys are talking about were intended to look grainy. In fact, I would argue that there is a small-scale trend towards grainy prints that began (not historically, but in recent years) with Eyes Wide Shut. Eyes Wide Shut was very grainy and I'm quite sure it was meant to be so. In my opinion, that aesthetic worked very well with the content of the film.

Changing Lanes was also intentionally grainy. I would assume that they used graininess to try to further attempt to give the film an edgy, cinema verite aesthetic. In my opinion, Changing Lanes failed in this respect. See my post in the reviews section for my entire rant.

I haven't seen EPII yet, but in that case, it sounds like it may have been a lab problem or some issue that arose with the digital to film transfer. Blackhawk Down, Seven and Panic Room were also most likely intentially grainy. I say intentionally as I can't speak for these filmmakers, nor have I read anything that would validate my statements.

But let's remember that we are talking about professionals that are working with enormous budgets here. Yes, Super 35 will tend to yield a more grainy anamorphic image, but these people have and know the ways to avoid the grainy look of the final print: slower, finer stocks, more light, etc. If they didn't want their films to look like they do, more often than not, they wouldn't. I am exaggerating a bit to make my point, as I am sure that even in the super high budget world of Hollywood, things don't always come out the way they intend, but more often than not, these filmmakers and cinematographers have access to the money and tools they need to achieve whatever look the want to.

It is not so much the Super 35 as it is the mass produced release prints, made at super high speeds (you can't be running printers at near real-time speed if you need 3000 prints to meet a release date deadline and have only a month lead time). And then there is the problem that has been created a kind of bad by-product of the fast film stocks now available, n that their availability takes pressure off the young lighting directors to use conventional key, back, and fill lights as was done for decades. With fast stocks they can get away with cheap down and dirty lighting techniques. They can use much less in the way of heavy duty lighting which would normally allow slower, finer grain stocks to be used with their deep, rich color saturation and very fine grain. A very traditional filmmaker, Richard Haines (not sure if he visits this forum, but posts regularly on the 35mm Forum), has some wonderful rants about how the new crop of directors have pretty much abandonded the conventional way films were lit, thus producing this current crop of murky, sometimes gray and desaturated films.

Also evidently they now use mulitple internegatives that make the final release prints more generations away from the camera negative than was done in the past -- a great contributor to the degraded look of today's films, according to Haines.

We just ran two "show prints" of MOULIN ROUGE and SW Ep 1 (I believe these are struck directly from the camera negative or at least from an internegative closer to the camera negative than the mass produced regular release prints. They were gorgeous. You could almost believe you were watching technicolor or 70mm, the sharpness is that dramatic over conventional release prints. And once you see a show print next to a regular print, you will immediately see how impressive 35mm technology really is.

Using digital elements is not helping matters either. I just saw LORD OF THE RINGS (yah, I know, I am not enamored of seeing films when they are first released -- I wait until they are just about played out so I am guaranteed a good seat -- almost like a private screening!) and the insertion of digital effects was about as obvious as day and night-- now we are in focus, now we are not. It's great that CGI can do anything the imagination can congure up; now all they need to do is to figure out how to get it in focus.

Super 35 can and does look really good. With todays modern Kodak fine grain film Super 35 when done right looks alot better than anamorphic ever could. There is far more depth of field, better contrast, and when done right no more noticable grain than any other format. One may forget that a film, or given section of a film was supposed to look grainyat the choice of the Cinematographer or Director, Again, anything that was not intended with this format, and anything that looks bad falls back into the labs fault catagory. Also lack of interaction between the Lab, Cinematographer, and Director can cause this fault. Most Cinematographers I've worked with despise the average high speed print that is kicked out of a lab. With a few exceptions, it does not represent what their work was intended to look like. If you have seen as many films dailies as I have that originated in Super 35 you would all be blown away! Many looked like they were shot in 65mm.

A 'show print' is a print which has been assigned for special screenings and is usually technically superior to the general print run of a given title.

The higher quality can be achieved, for example, by printing directly from the camera negative, and/or by very careful lab work.

Of course, general print runs can also be of excellent quality (minimal loss in steadiness and sharpness) when all the printing steps are done accurately. Sadly, this is not always the case.

High-speed printing is often cited as the reason for poor quality general release prints, but this isn't so. Very high quality high-speed contact prints can be made once the internegative elements have been produced correctly.

Very short throw houses with huge screens add to the problem. If some of the prints are run on a smaller screen, it is tolerable, IMHO.

I agree that most Super35 originated prints look grainy, but there are some good ones too, Oceans Eleven i beleive was shot in S35, and that looked great, Terminator 2 was a great looking film too. James Cameron seems to like a good picture as both T2 and Titanic were released in 70mm , so why not spend some of his budget on the 65mm film stock and pay the shite actors a little less?

Ocean's Eleven? That was one of the grainiest films I've ever seen (other than mid-1930s black and white). Granted, I've read on this forum that the graininess was intentional, and the film is otherwise well photographed, so I'd agree that it looked fine. But if you're looking for a Super 35 film that doesn't exhibit graininess, Ocean's Eleven is not the best example.

I disagree with Mark's comments on how "Super35 when done right looks a lot better than anamorphic ever could."

The only way how I see Super35 being done right is to either show it in 1.85:1 or blow it up to 70mm if the optical enlargement process has to be used. In going through the extra optical printing steps to get to 'scope 35mm a generation in image quality is lost.

Anamorphic 'scope is superior to Super35 for being able to use the full 4-perf frame and have all that extra emulsion used to capture image detail. Super35 imagery is getting blown up across both horizontal and vertical axis, just like a non-anamorphic widescreen DVD. Ugh!

The one single advantage that Super35 has is depth of field over use of spherical lenses. But that is more a matter of convenience (and price) than over quality. If depth of field is what the DP and director wants, they can get razor sharp focus across the entire frame if they choose their lenses and T-stop setting correctly. I have seen plenty of anamorphic movies where this has been done.

Shooting anamorphic 35mm forces the film crew to actually compose for the format rather than doing the proverbial "having their cake and eating it too" with Super35. Most Super35 films have a lifeless quality when it comes to the composition. The top and bottom of the frame has simply been lopped off and the composition really just looks like it. Super35 compositions (and quality) often look no better at all than the trailers for 1.85:1 films that have been blown up to 'scope.

When done right, anamorphic 35mm looks really great. Care must be taken with actor placement, set decoration, lighting and everything else to correctly accomodate the format. If all that extra work is not done, anamorphic can look disasterous. You'll get into the low depth of field headaches and such. But even with that, the film stocks are so fast that there is more flexibility with the kind of lenses and exposure settings that can be used. This is so much so that I am angry that film productions are not trying to give 70mm any kind of a legitimate chance. With the kind of cameras, lenses and film stocks that are available now, it would be so much easier to shoot a movie in 70mm than it would have been 20 years ago.

We'll always disagree on this I suppose. I can only relate back to all the dailies that I've run that were shot in Super 35 that looked unbelievable. I also feel that the gain in depth of field is definately worth using the format. Anamorphic camera lenses have from no depth of field at all to several feet at best. In fact it is the counter rotating diopters that are built into many anamorphic lenses that cause this shallow depth of field problem. Depth of field is sacrificed in many of these lenses to keep compression of the lens constant. I have an old set of B&L Cinemascope camera lenses that are far more capable of good depth of field, but suffer from non-linear compression during racking focus. This is only really visible on a close up shot of a person, or something with a circle being drawn. This is what is known as anamorphic mumps. Depth of field with Spherical lenses on the other hand can be pretty much unlimited, and it is this extra depth that creates the better illusion of reality. Our eyes do not "rack focus" like an anamorphic lens has to...our eyesight more closely resembles that of spherical lenses. Cameron's films are great examples of Super 35 done right but there have been many others along with his. Actually it would be advantagous to project all Super 35 films the way they are shot as this would result in best on-screen sharpness and eliminate the troublesome lab step in going to 4 perf anamorphic for general release. However when this step is carefully controled you'd have a hard time telling if a film had ever gone through this stage. The only added gain here is the on screen gain of light.
As far as films shot in Super 35 being poorly composed that is purely a function of the Director, and the Director of Photography. It is these two people more than any others on a film that create the look they deem good for the story. What I said about the ASC in my last post in this thread seems to apply to this statement. They have way too many members that just because they have shot one big film now have the title of ASC after their name. In the old days DP's had to photograph many large films to be voted into ASC, but again, politics seems to now drive their organization more than it ever has for what ever reason. I can remember the old roster of names in the ASC magazine there in the late 70's and early 80's that was simply amazing to read. These DP's also photographed many B films and some are great visual works of art thanks to them. Their great knowledge and experience saved many a B film back in the 50's. There are way too many DP's that turn out only so-so work these days. They sometimes seem to blot out the really good ones that are also ASC members. Weather a film actually looks good or not has nothing at all with which film format is used to shoot with. It appears that there are more inexperienced DP's turning out more junk these days, and perhaps this is due in part to the low quality B grade films that the studios keep wanting to churn out.
Today, any film format, including anamorphic, Super 35, and 1.85 can look bad, and many times has looked downright awful. Even 65mm cinematography can look poor. Far And Away comes right to mindon this one. What a waste of the 65mm format that film was, and it most likely riuned almost any chance 65mm had gained of making more headway back into everyday production...Far And Away would have looked about the same if it were shot in Super 16!

as for anamorphics haveing poor depth of field I have seen many films that have terrific depth of field that were shot anamorphic

To add to Gordon's comments, when anamorphic 35mm is shot at a high T-stop, the whole 4-perf negative is getting put into sharp focus. That is actually going to deliver a better quality of sharp detail than what is perceived with Super35.

The claims about Super35's superiority in terms of depth of field are a bit dubious. Sure, I could improve the depth of field of anamorphic photography by 200% if I loppped away half of the frame and used only 2 perfs of it for composition.

Depth of field and capability of detail should be seen as two different things. 5-perf 70mm has a very very low level of depth of field when compared to 4-perf 35mm. But if you can get the lighting and exposure settings just right, 70mm just absolutely blows away 35mm in terms of extreme high resolution razor sharp detail. Seeing a 70mm film like "Lawrence of Arabia" versus a 'scope 35mm print is like the difference between having 20/20 vision and needing glasses to correct blurry eyesight.

I see some of the same kinds of things going between Super35 and anamorphic 35mm. Sure, in some tight close up shot the background is going to be very blurry and vertically distorted using anamorphic. Rack focus moves on such shots are going to be awkward. But Super35 has its own tradeoffs on image quality. You often get an image with more noticeable grain and a lot less in terms of rich color. I think about it in terms of blowing up a colored balloon. When it is deflated, the color is very solid. When overinflated, that balloon's color gets very weak. I feel Super35 just stretches the emulsion out past what it is worth. It always falls short of 35mm anamorphic quality, especially when anamorphic is using the same high grain/high speed films.

I would only make a movie in Super35 for two reasons. One, I want a movie that can transfer to home video 1.33:1 TV release with minimal panning and scanning. That is the primary purpose above all others for Super35. It is "home video safe" widescreen. The second reason is that some filmmakers hate the anamorphic look, even though the anamorphic look is very fashionable these days judging by all the music videos out there being shot in 'scope.

I'm not qualified to comment on some of the technical details you guys are debating (duh). But in regard to everyone's comments about anamorphic mumps and related stuff like depth of field, I find that sometimes those small visual "flaws" are a good thing because they remind me I'm watching film and they seem like a normal part of professional cinematography, part of the "art" of making a movie. I mean I don't think these are necessarily flaws unless an unskilled DP is drawing attention to them. Does that make any sense? Whether these things come across on the screen as flaws or as part of the art of film making is up to the skill of the film makers. "Royal Tenenbaums" was anamorphic and it looked so damn good on the screen, I can't imagine it being done with spherical lenses and being the same movie. I dunno. I'm not arguing for or against anamorphic or spherical, just saying that they both have their place and in the right hands they can produce the desired results.

Sorry Bobby, but both you and Gord are wrong. Modern anamorphics still exhibit a shallower depth of field even at high T stops as compared to modern spherical lenses at the same T stop. It is partly due to the compression factor and also the inclusion of counter rotating diopters in the lens to keep compression constant. I've shot film with modern Panavison anamorphics myself and the B&L Cinemascope lenses I have actually give slightly better depth of focus than modern Panavision lenses but do not have the constant compression factor nor the great contrast that these modern lenses do. Sorry guys, but till you've shot with all three formats and both old and new anamorphs yourself you wouldn't understand.
I think David put it well when he said that all of these formats can produce the desired results when in the right hands.

Two recent movies that really took maximum advantage of the 35mm anamorphic production format are "Moulin Rouge" and "The Thin Red Line" --- very sharp images with almost no graininess.

"Super-35" can be "Done Right" too: e.g., "Titanic", "True Lies". But underexposure or using inappropriately fast film stocks can result in grainy images.

Depth of field is more critical with larger camera formats. Either more light (smaller f/stop) or more care (in focus pulling) is needed.

I was watching Crossroads and i found that to be grainy. It's flat not scope. Could that be originally Super 35 but the film makers decided to go with 1.85:1 theatrical prints for some reason?

No, I thought overall that 65mm was as waste on Far And Away. It was just was not very good looking film inspite of the 65mm cinematography....way too much diffusion was used to be able to tell what format it was shot in. There are alot of older films that looked far better than Far And Away! Sure the 70mm prints would provide brighter, steadier images with less visible dust and scratches but it is what was put on the negative that I didn't care much for.

You won't find too many rear anamorphs being used on large productions except for crash cams. Most 1st assistants go to what ever camera house the equipment is comming from and hand select the lenses for best color match, etc...these are ususally integrated units from Panavision, Arriflex, etc., that have already been optimized by the manufacturer. About the only advantage I can think of to using rear anamorphs is that there is usually less weight to the lens and they are a bit smaller...also keep in mind that using these attachments usually takes a given Superspeed lens OUT of the Superspeed catagory as the anamorph uses up a bit of light when at the rear of a lens. These days those super high speed integrated lenses, be they anamorphic, or spherical, are very important...although I don't necessarily agree with the way they are used alot of the time.

I'm not a motion picture DP, but I do know enough about film photography in general (particularly from my art school training and insight from some of my father's Pulitzer Prize winning news photographer friends) that a bigger negative is going to give you an ultimately better picture.

It is true that the balance of exposure, lighting and focus gets ever more critical with the larger the film negative, but a larger negative is going to have better contrast, better color quality and an overall sharper image. A smaller negative is easier to shoot. It takes more skill to correctly photograph a larger one. People using Hasselblad view cameras really have to know their stuff.

"Far and Away" had its own problems here and there, but there were plenty of points in that film where is was noticeably much sharper and richer in color than any 35mm 'scope film. Out of 1990's 70mm films, I tend to point out "Baraka" as a good example of 70mm work. I think the motion control shots of stars rotating around the earth's axis with Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon mountains as a backdrop ranks as some of the best imagery I've ever seen on 70mm.

I see the same general differences in color quality, contrast quality and sharp image with anamorphic 35mm shows. If done well, anamorphic 35mm looks better than just about any Super35 show. With the grain getting stretched out too much, its like putting only two tea bags in a gallon of sun tea when you really need at least eight. It gets weak.

One thing that also has to be mentioned with Super35 is how a growing number of those shows are using digital intermediate techniques to work in CGI, but also attempt to hide the flaws (grain, poor color rendition) that come about in Super35 origination. "Lord of the Rings" is a good example of that.

I drove 200 miles round-trip to see "Far and Away" in 70mm, at the Lloyd Center in Portland. Was very disappointed. I later saw it in 35mm on a mediocre screen here in Eugene and I thought it looked about the same.

Well finally we have an interesting thread going here. I am in complete disagreement with Bobby about Contrast, overall sharpness, and color quality between smaller still format and large still camera formats. I shoot 35mm, 6X9, and 4X5 on quite a regular basis(at least bi weekly). If one has lenses capable of great resolution it is very difficult to tell the difference between 6X9 medium format and 4X5, which is considered large format. I Use 65, 90, 100, 150, and 210mm Rodenstocks which are all interchangable between the 6X9 and the 4X5 cameras...they are both full view cameras, not limited use Field Type view cameras. I typiclly shoot Fuji Velvia (sorry John but most senic photographers do) as it has the highest resolving power of all color transparency films, amazing color saturation and wonderful contrast. If I shoot the same scene with both cameras through the same lens I get exactly the same results photometrically speaking (according to the lab I use) using the same film. In other words they make almost no change to the filter pack when printing, and usually only change printing time exposure from one format to the other. Only a little more grain is apparent from the 6X9, which is still incredibly difficult to see
at 16X20 size. With the 35mm Nikon its another story but still pretty amazing results when using Velvia. Going to 16X20 does cause the grain to show up a wee tiny bit but contrast and color are still visually pretty much the same as the larger formats. I guess I should go out this weekend and shoot my Color chart with all three formats and post the results of these on my web site next week for all to see.

I agree with an earlier contributor that the production process for release prints must be critical to this.

In cinemas where I showed the same film several times with different prints, I noticed enormous differences between each copy in the contrast, saturation and graininess of the picture. I think I must have handled about 10 prints of Titanic in total and they ranged from crisp and dense to grainy and washed-out.

Ironically, new 35mm prints of archival rerelease titles generally look far sharper than routine release prints of new films nowadays (though admittedly, the larger frame area of Academy or full-gate silent relative to S35 and widescreen flat 35 makes this a bit of an unfair comparison).

I haven't yet noticed this 'Super 35mm' anamorphic, of which you speak. So, they shoot the film, with no anamorphic process, then just mask it and compress it horizontally to fit a 35mm scope screen? Well, I've always been able to tell when a film was shot using the scope process - even on TV. With a film shot using anamorphic lenses, if you have something in focus, like a circle, it has a proper 1:1 aspect ratio. As soon as it goes out of focus, like lights in the background while the actors are in focus, the out-of-focus stuff becomes horizontally compressed. This is particularly noticeable with lights in the background.

If Ocean's Eleven was not shot using anamorphic lenses, then the lights in the background should remain round. I see that it's still showing here at our 15-cinema complex, so I must check that out.

Unrelated, but you mentioned Ali using this process: A premiére of Ali was held at our complex, and Will Smith, Michael Mann (director), Nelson Mandela and other celibrities were here. If only I'd known about the question of Super-35. I would've asked Michael Mann about it.

By the way, it seems to me that a scope film will definitely have more light output and more contrast when viewed on a top-masking screen, and possibly even with side masking. I mean, with a flat film, you mask half of the aperture out. With scope you let the whole frame through. So, being confident that scope will give you more brightness AND more contrast on a top-masking screen, has anyone done the math for side-masking? I mean, there'll be more light, but the screen is also bigger in that instance.

Well, that answers my question!

The scope film on a screen that has side-masking will have more light on the screen than a flat film, at a ratio of 13:16!

The other facts were interesting, too. Forgive my ignorance, but I always thought that scope was 2.35:1, not 2.39:1. What gives?

Posting color chart results from 6 X 9 and 4 X 5 chromes on the web is not going to yield greatly different results (computer screens have very puny resolution and limited color accuracy). You would have to make a high res drum scan and do a tiny extraction of that scan to try and show any perceiveable difference. And both of those view camera formats are extreme high resolution formats. Super35 and 'Scope 35 are not.

With motion picture film, you're taking about taking a much smaller size negative and blowing it on a screen much larger than any print you would make with a view camera. Those two items greatly amplify the roughly 40% size difference in negative between a cropped 2.35:1 Super35 frame and full 4-perf anamorphic 35mm frame. Anamorphic 'scope originated 35mm film images are already pushing the limits of what is acceptable for 35mm use. 5-perf 70mm was developed partly in response to the obvious compromise in quality that anamorphic represented. Super35 origination is taking the blow-up to widescreen method a step farther.

I think you are overlooking the real point here. One of the principal reasons for shooting Super 35 is that Spherical lenses will always have greater depth of field than their counterpart anamorphic lenses will. Even the latest Anamprphics have less than half the depth of field that an equivelent spherical does. While some Anamorphics have slightly better depth of focus than others do the real point is that Spherical lenses do far better and always will.

The standards changed. See: http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/apertures.htm where Film-Tech (and Kodak's) very own Human Search Engine traces the history of the 'scope aperture.

IMDB, by the way, continues to list all anamorphic as 2.35:1. They do, however, list Academy ratio correctly as 1.37:1 (many projectionists get this wrong). Just another example of how unsuited the IMDB is right now for technical data.

I don't think that Oscar-nominated titles from only a few years is a large enough sample from which to create a realistic statistic. Because I'm curious (and I assume at least a few of you may be curious too), I've dug through a massive research project I've been logging over the years on scope releases, and this is what I've come up with for the past five years:

Keep in mind that I haven't supplied any figures for FLAT releases. My guess is that they account for around 75-80 percent of all releases. Others may have different figures, though. The latest American Cinematographer Manual, for instance, states that SCOPE releases account for 45 percent (which I feel is an inflated figure). The tricky part of gathering these types of numbers is that it's just plain difficult to account for everything. And then there's the definition of "everything." Do you include independent releases or just studio films? What about films shown at a film festival that never get picked up by a distributor? Straight-to-video releases? What about releases from other countries that never get released here in North America, or that we never hear about? Titles from India?

My figures generally account for North American releases and as many international releases as I can possibly track. So, please keep that in mind. The figures I provided can only be considered a guide for the curious and for those who wish to continue a discussion on the topic rather than the final word on the subject.

Well, I checked out Ocean's Eleven this morning. Thought I'd have to wait a while to see what I was looking for. Nope - as soon as I walked into the theatre I could see it - grainy film, colour seemed overly saturated, and, of course, all of the lights in the background, that were out of focus, were round, NOT ellipsoid, as I've always known in scope films.

I only found out about this Super-35mm format in this thread - I wonder if I've seen a film done this way, in a theatre, and not noticed that?

I hope not. 'Cos then my trained eye's not what I thought it was.

Again, Super 35 doesn't have to look that "bad"... but why bother with anamorphic photography if all you're striving for is a grainy, gritty look?
