My theater actually has proper optical quality port windows (the first time I've had the luxury of working with such windows!). Our installation tech was very picky abot what we use to clean them. He gave us a couple rolls of Webril Wipes, and that's what I've been using. They seem to work fine, except that they sometimes leave some cotton "lint" on the windows. How to I completely get rid of that?

Also, sometimes the windows come out a bit streaky. I've tried cleaning some of the windows with a lens tissue after I use the Webril Wipe to get it as spotless as possible, but you can still see some *slight* streaking. I know that ideally you are not supposed to see any of the picture on the port glass, but in reality is this ever going to happen?

Are Kim Wipes OK to use as lens tissue? Until this theater, that's what I've always used. I am currently taking a soldering class and we use Kim Wipes to clean the flux residue off the boards. The instructor said they have fiberglass in them, which raised a red flag in my head. I've never known them to damage a lens, but I just wnated to make sure. thx.

Like Gordon said KimWipes come in different types. Make sure you're using the ones intended for use on glass, not the ones used for cleaning solder flux residue!

And, yes...as Gordon and David suggested, be very careful on what grade of Kim-Wipe you use.

At the AMC in Pasadena, we used a chalky liquid by a company called Liberty Optical (or something like that) to clean the port windows. When the liquid dried it would leave behind a white film and then we would have to *gently* buff the glass. It would get SCARY clear after a cleaning like that.

I don't know if those windows were coated. I think they were the Kelmar windows. They were on a hinge and you could easily get to the other side without having to trek up a ladder.

If anybody knows the real name of this product I've described, please post it here...I'd like to order some of it.

What are Kimwipes?

Any camera store should carry proper lens tissue and lens cleaning fluid. That's what I've always used.

KimWipes are the laboratory-grade tissues produced by the Kimberly-Clark corporation, the folks who bring you Kleenex(tm).
I seem to recall there being many more varieties than I see on the web page there, but KC makes a fair number of wipes, many of which are not branded KimWipes, though they may be called that colloquially.

Actually, I still prefer the good old fashioned Rosco Lens Tissue. I would think twice before I would use anything else on my new lens.

Here is something that Brad suggested back on 1-21-2001. I tried it and it DOES work.

Get yourself lens cleaner, McDonald's napkins and a small 2x4 inch sanding block from a hardware store. Using 3-4 napkins at a time, wrap them on the sanding side of the block and douse the napkins fairly generously with lens cleaner. Wipe the inside of the glass with medium pressure (nothing strenuous) in a vertical motion. Then IMMEDIATELY take a few more napkins and lay them on the sanding block and press HARD on the glass to wipe it dry, again using vertical strokes. Repeat this procedure for the auditorium side, but wipe this one in a horizintal fashion. Then turn on the projector and xenon with no film in the projector and take a look at your glass. If you see any vertical streaks, they are on the inside of the glass and you can generally touch them up with a dry napkin. If the streaks are horizontal, they are on the outside of the glass and again you can generally fix it with a dry napkin.
There's just something about those McDonald's napkins that works wonders on optical glass. However you must have the sanding block to do a good job. Don't try and use other kinds of napkins, as McDonald's has the only good ones for this job. The lens cleaner will get off that baked on cheap glass cleaner residue. When you are done, you will not be able to tell there is glass in the window frame.

BTW, could you tell me who manufactures the Webril Wipes. I will have our buyer try to get some. The MikeyD's near the theatre really don't like to see me!! :-)

The McDonald's thing would be to much of a pain, seeing we have 15 screens and have the THX doulbe port glass. i use i squeegee and squeegee scruber. the cleaner is "squeegee off" stuff works great. its very dilutable. 2 table spoons to a gallon of water. i can do all 15 screen in no time.

What is Bon Ami? I'm interested.

For the collectors/reflectors I just tried Simichrome today and it's amazing!

My new tech turned me on to it. We were able to find it at the local motorcycle enthusiast shop. It's a paste and it comes in a tube.

It says that it is for metal products, so I don't think I'll be using it on glass (although it might work just fine).

I have no idea what grade of KimWipes were used at my theaters or in the soldering lab at school, but the boxes look the same and the wipes feel the same. (At my current theater we use Rosco lens tissue; I was just asking out of curiosity because I used KimWipes in the past.) I would hope that a theater supplier would be smart enough to carry the optical quality wipes, so perhaps my school is using the wrong ones. Or, are the boxes very very similar with the only difference, perhaps, being the product number?

From the website, it looks like in both cases I was using product 34155. I recognize the name Delicate Task Wipers from both boxes. The website calles them KIMTECH Science Delicate Task Wipers, and I guess the different product numbers are just different sizes and quantities. I don't remember the name KIMTECH from the box, but that's the only product that has the name Delicate Task Wipers in it. The site doesn't really specify what it's specific uses are.

Like Bob Koch, i too used Bon-Ami (cake form) for my Balcold reflectors (carbon-arc days). Was the best thing going we found for cleaning reflectors. Anyone ever tried this on (non-treated) port glass? Does it still exist?

It sounds to me like you were using Glass Wax to clean your ports. I have used it for years and it works very well. You do have to remember to buff it or you will have a cloudy coating and you will see all the picture on your glass. Once buffed the glass virtually disappears.

Paul, sorry, I forgot to answer your question. Yes, our port glass is coated. I think. How can you tell? I think it's coated because the lens cleaner behaves the same way on our port glass as it does on a lens, which is totally different than the way it behaves on regular glass. I can't really explain it, but do you know what I mean?

Bon Ami is a bathroom clenser that is mostly made of feldspar. While I wouldn't try it on a dichroic reflector, it will otherwise really go to town on a very dirty mirror. I posted the best way to use it a while back the last time this came up, in a thread on reflector cleaning. It's also freakin' GREAT on automobile windshields, it'll take off those little dots of tree sap/bird poop that other cleaners won't touch. If you don't find Bon Ami, don't try Comet or anything else, they're just not the same.

Y'know, not to turn this to cars, but I learned something interesting not long ago from a professional auto detailer. He told me that a lot of glass streaking didn't come so much from the cleaning product, but what was used to wipe it on and off with. He advised me never to use a rag that had gone thru a wash cycle with fabric softener, it seems that most glass cleaners will cause the residual softener to leave the rag and streak the glass (and as it turned out, most paper towels, like Bounty, et. al., have a type of softener on them from manufacture. He used plain newsprint paper, which he got from a packing/shipping store. He also raved about a spray glass cleaner, Stoner Invisible Glass, which I've seen at Pep Boys.

Although Bon Ami is unlikely to scratch plain glass, it may be abrasive enough to damage an anti-reflection or dichroic coating.

Note: Bon Ami comes in two kinds of powder. "Bon Ami Cleaning Powder" is the same as the cake form. Bon Ami says that NASA used the powder to clean the windows on the Space Station. Wow!

The second type of powder is called "Bon Ami Cleanser" and it contains bleaching agents...I've been able to find this in the local grocery store, but not the "Original Cleaning Powder" or the cake. Looks like they're impossible to find locally.

I ordered the Bon Ami cake online.

Back to my original point: Be careful not to use the more commonly found "Cleanser" because I'm willing to bet it's not appropriate for the booth windows.

Richard: Thank you for telling me about Glass Wax. As I mentioned, I couldn't remember the name of the actual product we were using. It wasn't Glass Wax, but I know the product you're talking about. It's a pink liquid, right?

Josh: We used Plexus on the aircraft windows. I think NASA and the military use it, too. Still, I can't say if it's gentle enough for a projection booth window.

There's also a product called Novus that comes in a kit of three bottles. I use the #2 to remove fine scratches from the iPod, but don't think it's intended as a general-purpose cleaner. It's great for removing scratches though.

Glass is about a 5.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale:

Any material with a higher Mohs Hardness rating will scratch glass. Dichroic and antireflection coatings are likely to be more fragile.

Plexiglass is VERY easily scratched. You can use lens cleaning fluid, but you have to apply it and wipe it with a very soft cotton cloth or a shammy cloth, and even then, not to press hard. I once heard that Lexan is harder than generic plexiglass and thus more difficult to scratch, but I wouldn't go on that until it can be verified. The most important thing is, never to rub the surface once the liquid cleaner has evaporated, which is a trick in itself because you as you are wiping it, the liquid is drying.

Once there is no liquid on the surface, even soft cloth will scratch plexi. Again, Lexan may resist such easy scratching. But compaired to double side coated waterclear glass, plexi is dirt cheap. Even if you accidently scratch it, you just cut a new piece and replace it.

John made the reference to that fact that plexi may pipe light, so it would transmit a bit less light than its more expensive coated glass counterpart, but without seeing the actual number comparison, and going my observation of how each worked in my theatres, I would bet that light transmission loss by using plexi wouldn't be significent, at least not proportional to the cost differential.

Someone else may have already mentioned this (I'm too lazy to review the entire thread). But light scratches on plexiglas or Lexan can be virtually eliminated with Novus #2 Plastic Polish. Novus #3 is more abrasive, be careful with it. Novus #1 is a plastic cleaner & protector that gives a nice sheen, but it might not work well for port "glass" due to streaking. Not sure about that one.

HOWEVER, Novus #2 is mildly abrasive, so if there's any special coating on the "glass" it will probably not be good for it. As long as it's uncoated though, it would be worth a try for removing scratches.

Nobody has mentioned XeKleen II for glass windows and lenses yet, so I might as well add it to the list of products here. It's not my favorite product, but it's out there and it's readily available.

Interesting: XeKleen II says it can be used on lenses.

Nobody's mentioned their method(s) of cleaning a lens yet....

Refering to Manny's earlier question about "Liberty Mirror" optical cleaner...it is called B-321 and it does work wonders on port glass. It is readily available through NCS. It is also quite good for reflector cleaning. There is a bit of a learing curve to use it and in the wrong hands it will do more harm than good, but I have yet to find a better product for cleaning port glass. As with any cleaning method, it is helpful to run the projector with raw light to see exactly the kind of results your are getting.

I have this sliding glass door that got really filthy and Windex was leaving streaks all over the place.

I decided to experiment with garden-variety Comet from the grocery store and I'll just say now that the glass is so clear that I'm going to have to put little stickers on it to spare my nieces/nephews from running into it.

Comet was mentioned earlier because it contains the same ingredient as Bon Ami. The concern is that it also contains a bleaching agent.

I started with a weak solution of Comet-to-water to get the initial layers of grunge off; for stubborn areas I dipped the damp cloth into a dish with a heavily concentrated paste of Comet/Water.

A lot of elbow-grease later, the glass is perfectly clear.

Note: This is just feedback and a general FYI. I'm NOT saying to go ahead and try this on a booth window if it's coated or optically pure or what-have-you.

It certainly did not scratch, fog or haze the glass like I thought it might.

Again, be VERY careful about using ANY abrasive cleaner (no matter how "mild") on fragile dichroic or optical coatings.

Novus #2 plastic polish is a wonderful product, but as John said, you definitely don't want to use anything abrasive on coated optics.

Lot of good ideas here. On optical port glass I use lens cleaner and lens tissue. On regular glass I use downy dryer cloths dry and let them take the dust off. They remove surface dust instantly as they attract the static property of dirt. I wash once a month with a squeegee and one drop of dish detergent in a bucket of water. Same as my reflector. I have no streaking. I wait till glass is cool until I clean it.

Just a reminder that the Bauch & Lomb "Balcold" reflectors had the dichoric coating on the rear of the reflector, while the Strong "Tuffcold" reflectors were front-surface coated. We were warned about this at the time.

Does anyone really use abrasives to clean lenses? That seems like it would destroy any coating on the glass. I've never had a problem with lens paper and Kodak or Rosco lens cleaning fluid, used as infrequently as possible.

What about coated optical port glass? I've never worked anywhere that could afford it, but I can't imagine that Windex would be the appropriate means of cleaning it.

On my optical ports I use Rosco lens cleaner and KimWipes EX-L Delicate Task Wipes, as Scott said, "as infrequently as possible".

I was also warned never to use Windex on automobile glass. Apparently, over time, the ammonia in it reacts with the safety glass to produce a haze. The best stuff is available from the automotive dealership, and considering how long a can of the stuff lasts, is not that much more expensive.

Our instillation tech said that we could use regular Windex. NOT industrial strength, and if the theater has generic "glass cleaner," he said not to use it because we don't know what's in it.

I agree that Plexiglas and Lexan are not the best choice for port "glass". They scratch easily, and may introduce considerable flare, reducing image contrast. The suggestion of finding anti-reflection coated glass from old copiers is a good one.

Finally a way to recycle some of this obsolete computer stuff. And just in time for me, because as I mentioned, after 10 years, my Lexan is showing minute scratches even though the Lexan brand is supposed to be tougher than your garden variety plexi.

Thing is, I looked at the glass on both our big expensive copier and a retired scanner and the glass in neither looks like it's coated -- at least not as I can tell just by eyeballing it. I wonder if there is the same need in the scanner application for coated glass as there is for projection. I'll see if there are any more technical details somewhere on the manufacturers' websites. The other thing I notice, although I haven't yet dismantled the scanner, is that it doesn't seem like the glass is as thick as port glass. That would bother me as we only use a single piece, not double.

I'll report back when I find out some more.

I was interested in Mark Ogden's comment about it being best not to use paper or cloth that had possible fabric softener in it for cleaning glass. (Maybe this accounts for the success of McDonald's paper napkins - perhaps not having a fabric softener used?).

I was impressed with the glass cleaner from General Motors, so I decided to use it along with newsprint.

In Toronto, there are four main papers.
The Globe and Mail is read by those who run the province.
The Toronto Daily Star is read by those who think someone else should run the province.
The Financial Times is read by those who own the province.
The readers of the Toronto Sun don't give a damn who runs the province as long as the Sunshine girl on page 3 has large breasts.

I chose the Sun.

I made up a loop from a discarded trailer (to protect the lens) ran the projector with lamp, and proceeded to the auditorium. Thanks to the "brilliant" design of the non-opening ports in this particular theatre, I was forced to grab an 8 ft. ladder in route.

The picture being projected through the port-hole showed any spots I might other-wise have missed. I used the FLAT lens btw (which provided the largest image on the port glass).

Spraying the automotive glass cleaner and then scrubbing the port glass, I then let it begin to dry, and followed up with a fresh piece of newsprint.

In the booth, with the picture still running, I repeated the process (being careful not to let any of the spray hit the projection lens).


I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I had a much clearer port than I had been formerly able to achieve with Windex and Bounty.

Colour contrast in the projected image was greatly improved.

As long as this is bumped back to the top, let me ask another question -- it's not exactly port glass, but it IS glass so.....Is the heat filter glass as susceptible to finger oil as is the xenon quartz envelope? Today I checked the filter on one of our ORC 4500w lamphouses and found that it had finger prints burned into the silverish/pinkish coating. It was also badly cracked and then it fell apart in my hands as I tried to clean it. I assume that any contaminant, especially finger prints, will cause uneven heating of the filter glass and thus the cracked filter, just like finger prints on the xenon bulb will damage it.

Now the question is, can I use ANY infrared filter, such as that sold by Edmund Scientific? Or is there some special deal with the filters in these higher wattage lamphouses? As I recall the ones sold by the manufacturer were fairly expensive and the price is by size. So what would be the problem taking a smaller piece and placing it closer to the aperture, say just behind the shutter (we're using Century DAWs) -- that would require a smaller and therefore less expensive piece. But of course a smaller piece probably won't deal with the infrared as well as a large one, right?

Yes, fingerprints or other contaminants on the surface of ANY optical element subjected to the very intense radiant energy and heating in a projector are likely to cause permanent damage to that element.

An auxillary dichroic heat filter should reflect the invisible infrared energy (>700 nanometres) to a heatsink, whilst passing the visible light (400 to 700 nanometres) to illuminate the film. As the power is increased or the size of the beam decreased, the heat load on the filter (watts per square millimetre of area) increases, and the base material of the filter needs to be able to withstand the heating. Usually, quartz or PYREX glass are used. Common optical glass is more likely to break, as its thermal expansion coefficient is greater. The filter should NOT be mounted rigidly, as it needs room to expand and contract with heating and cooling. With dichroic filters, the angle of reflection is critical to the "cutoff" wavelength, and needs to be specified.

As always, John, thanks for the wealth of information.

So from what you are saying, the filter can be either an absorbing filter that absorbs infrared and passes white, or it can be a dichroic filter that reflects infrared and passes white. I wish I new which one we were getting (they are replacing the broken one -- new filter (costs over $400). If it is a dichoric, then you are saying the angle at which it is installed has to be precise? I am assuming ORCON's filter slots are designed so that will happen if it is dichroic. My gut tells me these are not, only because they don't look anything like a dichroic reflector glass material, but reflectors are a different animal, so that might not apply. Plus, I don't see any obvious heat sink.

While we are waiting for the replacement pieces (they come in two halves that are held together by the slot they sit in) I am going to have to use the filters off the old Eastman 25B carbon arc lamphouse. It is oversized enough so it covers the full shutter opening, yet compact enought that it will fit in the ORC mating cone. We'll see if it cracks into a million pieces because of the heat. The carbon arc in that lamphouse was only burning 50A, not nearly as much energy as a 4500W xenon in the ORCON.

A dichroic heat filter that reflects IR and passes the visible light gets hot, but not nearly as hot as a heat filter made to ABSORB the IR energy (e.g., Pittsburgh 2043 heat glass). At very high power levels, the dichroic heat filters are a better choice.

Well, we ran last night -- opening night at the Movies in the Park (Celebrate Brooklyn Summer Festival) -- without incident. Evidently the old Eastman 25B heat glass worked fine -- didn't crack or shatter and the film, Harold Lloyd's SPEEDY with the Aloy Orchestra, didn't suffer, despite the improvised heat filter. Audience of 2000 endured a some on-and-off drizzle during the presentation -- quite amazing to see them sitting there in the rain, but they seemed unbothered -- we only lost a handful who had toddlers with them.

To get the filter holder in place, I simply slid the lamphouse back a quarter of an inch so I could stick heat filter unit in between the ORCON exit cone and the docking cone of the Century, then refocus the bulb a tad, and we were in business.

Here's an intersting aside -- one of the reels of SPEEDY, which was a near mint print, except for 3 or 4 accordian splices at each of the reel joints (who teaches these people how to splice?), about a half of the third reel changed from B&W stock to color stock and had tinted sequences. At first I though, well, this was intended and done to recreate the original tinted presentation. But that can't be because why wouldn't the rest of the film be tinted? My guess is that a section of that reel was damaged and they replaced it with footage from another version where color film was used. Is anyone familiar with this title -- did it have a few tinted sections and most of the rest of the film was in B&W? It certainly was disconcerting, all of a sudden seeing color. And it is amazing how we forget how good B&W looks -- I mean really sharp as a tack -- then <SPLICE> and there's color -- not exactly soft focus, but not as crisp as the B&W either. Ah, how much those other two emulsion layers change the apparent resolution. I was very glad it switched back to B&W for the last reel.

I'm dredging this one up in hopes of finding an expert on plexiglass and other like products. We will be replacing our plexiglass booth window soon, hopefully, and have some questions. First off, I must mention that the piece of material we're replacing is approximately 22"x100", so the cost of optical glass makes that an impossibility. I want to look into lexan for the reasons that Frank Angel mentioned, but does anyone know if a particular type or brand of plexiglass or a like material optically better, or are they all comparable?

Does it really need to be that big? Couldn't you frame the actual projection port to the minimum size needed (e.g., 22 x 22 inches) to allow high quality port glass, and use Plexiglas or Lexan for the rest? Are you double glazing for sound? If not, that's an awful lot of area for unwanted sound transmission.

Unfortunately, that is not an option. Our venue is multipurpose; it is used for film and video projection, lectures, theater, concerts, dance, and virtually anything else you can put on the stage. Therefore, our port glass is used for a multitude of things: 35mm changeover projection, 16mm pedestal projection, video projection, slide projection, occasionally a follow spot, and is sometimes used as a tech booth for production managers and sound recordists. Often, we need to reconfigure the booth and projector placement for a particular event, so having optical glass in only certain areas could potentially limit our options for non-film (or partial film) events, much to my colleagues dismay. [Frown] Sound leakage is certainly an issue, but we really need all of the viewable space and the versatility a single piece of material provides. Thanks for the suggestion though. [Smile]

I know the feeling. Several Kodak screening rooms were forced to have large windows, precluding the use of coated optical glass (although we still do use high quality "water white" plate glass, and avoid plastics). But for critical image evaluation, we can move the glass out of the way if needed.

Being in much a similar boat, I've wondered at the feasability of framing optical glass within a larger sheet of general purpose glass.

Joe, what's wrong with having an optical glass port at the spot where your 35mm projectors usually are, and if they have to move elsewhere for some special event, well, it won't look as good as it might, but at least it'll look better all the rest of the time.

p.s.: in the implausible department, imagine having a window composed of modular glass pieces that you could move around and swap in and our as needed by the position of various sources...

It isn't completely implausible, John, but the limitations caused by the frames/seams could be a problem, especially for non-film/video events. We get all sorts of things going on here and I must admit that having that much flexibility is great.

The way this place was designed, the port glass is 142" x 13".
The port glass is made up of 3 pieces of optical glass and 4
pieces of general purpose glass. I have a second set of port
glass, set 8 inches in front of the other set of glass.
I have no sound problems in the auditorium from the booth.

I use the delicate kimwipes exclusively almost 5 a show cleaning the Imax field flatner with no problems in fact they were originaly proposed to IMAX by Lietz optical

A guy in the early 1990s showed me his booth; it had large float glass "ports" with a circular section cut out in front of the lens & a square of optical glass taped over the opening.

Dragging this one up from the depths of time - again.

Our install tech has recommended using a generic ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex to clean the projector lenses and port glass. Having only ever used green lens cleaner, this seems strange to me. But is there any reason not to? Is Windex too strong or abrasive?

Schneider Cinelux lenses, nothing special about the port windows.

Lens cleaner is generally a solution of isopropyl alcohol in water. Glass cleaner may have additional ingredients such as solvents and dyes.

I would hesitate using a general glass cleaner on optical glass, not even considering whether or not the lens is coated or the port window has an anti-reflective finish.

I used to shoot that 70% isoprop alcohol from a spray bottle and use Kemwipes on such surfaces.

Been using Rosco for decades -- I put it in an atomizer bottle so I can get a really fine spray to avoid it seeping into the lens elemets (which happened to me once -- fogged the picture and I had to take the lens apart, dry it and put it back together before the change-over).

Rosco isn't all that expensive and if you use it sparingly, one bottle will last quite a long time. No reason that I can see to experiment with all kinds of other stuff not made specifically for coated lenses, just to save a few pennies.

Frank....I always applied the cleaner to the lens tissue, not dirctly to the lens to avoid getting it into the lens.

Question? Though we haven't gotten our 35 mm equipment this discussion is instresting to me. Our theatre built in 1950 doesn't have port windows just square holes cut into the wall with a metal shutter that slides up and down. What is the benefit of having a window or the benfit of having it the way we do?

I have attached a photo to better explain what I am talking about.

With regard to your question ... A port window cuts down the amount of projection room noise that can be heard in the auditorium. If you can get away without glass, doing so would eliminate the problems of dirty/scratched/bad/non-optical glass reducing the amount of light making it to your screen.

Adam, the metal shutters are from the days when nitrate film (very flamable) was used. If you look carefully, you will probably fine metal links that will brake away when heated by fire, causing the shutters to fall and protect the rest of the theatre from fire. The walls in such booths are also double thick brick or cinderblock on all sides with poured concrete floors and ceilings.

You might want run some film with the sound off and go into the theatre to see how much mechanical sound escapes from your open ports. If you don't hear the projector then you are probably OK, but if you do, then you might want to consider installing at least a single pane of coated OPTICAL glass (not regular glass which will color the light and introduce distortion) to stop mechanical noise.

If you don't hear mechanical noise which might be the case in a very big house with a high balcony, then you can probably get way with no glass, which has its advantages. BUT, if do leave the ports opened without glass, then you have to be especially cautious of voices carrying into the house. You'll have to keep in mind to always speak softly, especially when on the phone. Be careful of other extranious sounds too, like banging reels and cans and noise from the rewind machines. Booth monitor speakers need to be carefully aimed and set at a level so they are not transmitting sound into the theatre as well.

One of our booths has a single, wall-to-wall window instead of small ports, which at first looks very impressive and is why the architect used it, but it has some big disadvantates, not the least of which is that it does not totally stop noises from reaching the audience, especially banging film cans and voices. Voices, for some reason, really travel much better than you might expect.

Case in point: my 6plex has the Kelmar port window setups with the glass that has the magnetic strips to hold the the glass in place over the projection port and the viewing port.

One of the floor goons came upstairs one day, took out the projector port glass to holler down at one of the fellow floorstaff. He put the glass back in, but didn't do it right where it fell out and shattered when it hit the floor.

While the glass was being replaced, I took strips of cardboard measured so it would just touch the edge of the light bean from the projector, and taped these strips to both the inside of the port frame and the booth side of the port frame - creating a double baffle which really eliminated booth noise from exiting out into the auditorium.

I was ALMOST tempted to leave this setup like this since I did get a slightly brighter picture being that the light was now firing directly to the screen and not being diffused through glass. But, with my makeshift setup of just being taped up, I know that it would fall down on someone and they wouldn't know, (or care) how to fix it back to place.
