Just changed my 7kw bulb. Put in an Ushio and could not get it to focus enough light on sreen. So I put in the superior quartz and bingo...Great light. Should I send the Ushio back or try it again when I get my Align-O-Tron?

HI JAN
First USHIO are one of the better brans in short arc lamps around.
So I would not send it back untill you are sure it's the problem.
AS you know, you have do a lamp alignment when a new lamp is installed
Don't forget all lamps are not the same size ,shape.

Aren't alignment and focus two separate (but related) functions?
I thought the alignment process assured a direct line-of sight
between the axis of the lamp, reflector, aperture, lens and center
of the screen. Whereas focus moved the reflector forward or back to concentrate the light evenly on the film frame in the gate.
Therefore, couldn't the alignment be perfect, but the screen illumination be too dim because of a need to correct the focus?If so, couldn't Jan's problem be a need to focus the light to and from the reflector?

The problem may also be you need an adapter on the Ushio lamp to get it in the correct location in the lamphouse
Just because it has the same letter designation there are often dimensional differences between manufacturers
