
I have a slightly unusual setup and would appreciate some assistance on a couple of items from anyone (forum member or not) who has set one of these up for changeover operation. I've asked everyone I know and am starting to think this unit has never actually been set up in any fashion other than with a platter or tower.

I might be the person to have the most unusual set... 5 projectors, 3 35/70 Bauers, one 16 Bauer and the usual longplay 35 projector for commercial operation.
This setup operates with SDDS 3000 changeover, and it was done the way it was proposed in the quick start guide.
It requires (like a DA 10/ CP 500 etc) a motor start information on the 37 DB connector. Then it should automaticly switch over to the second projector after the time set in the software. In my case it works quite well. There is no need for a dowser information, even though I would love to have dowser controlled X/O. The motor start was introduced to hve full compatibility with the Dolby type control, so that both can use the same information from the projectors. Whatcannot be done is to just play single reels, and hope X-over works, it requests the following reel, for a time code consistancy. If the following reel is not used, it will take additional seconds to synchronize, which can get you mad, one of my friends had to encounter this.
This is why I love dowser controlled X/O, but then the machine must have addional memory to intermiately store digital information from both cameras, and just switch the data stream... a dreram not to come true. Most installations are single projector, and thinking of the recent business in cinema industry, more features will not happen with any brand system.
WIRING INSTRUCTIONS
DA20 motor start connector J9
Connect pin 1 to a relay triggered by projector 1's "motor on" switch (or automation).
Connect pin 9 to a relay triggered by projector 2's "motor on" switch (or automation).
Connect pin 5 via relay such that pins 5 and 1 are closed whenever projector 1's motor is running, but also so that pins 5 and 9 are closed whenever projector 2's motor is running.
SDDS DFP-3000 DB37 automation connector:
Connect pin 2 to pin 1 of Dolby's J9 connector.
Connect pin 33 to pin 9 of Dolby's J9 connector.
Connect pin 14 *or* 15 to pin 5 of Dolby's J9 connector.
The DA20 has no provision for user adjustable changeover delay. It is set for 7.75 seconds. The DA20 will glitch on you if you do not have your changeover logic connected. The DA20 wants to see that changeover pulse as confirmation of the changeover.
The DFP-3000 has user adjustable settings in the setup software to tell the unit how much delay you want. The Sony doesn't care about an actual changeover pulse. It will do it's changeover X seconds after the incoming projector's motor is started...nice and simple. As my automated changeovers are currently set to 8 seconds, I set the SDDS to 8 seconds as well. This indeed works flawlessly, but 8 seconds is too long if you are going to run things manually. Obviously this is a setting that needs to be determined with each installation, but it was very nice of Sony to include the option.
As for DTS, it just does it's own thing when it sees incoming timecode on the unused reader. It's not perfectly timed, but at least you don't end up accidentally initiating a sound changeover if you are running down the leader on the next reel. I have this system wired up so that my "auto cue run down" motor switch does not affect the sound logic. (Assuming a cue has been put on the leader, this one switch will run the film down and stop at the exact starting point of the leader.
) I suspect *most* changeover installations are wired so that some motor switch somewhere will not initiate a sound changeover, but we'll have to wait for Mr. Guttag to chime in on that one since he is probably single-handedly installing 99% of the 2 projector installations these days. 
Oh and by the way, anyone actually setting up a changeover booth...CA21 automations should be mandatory. These automations running in changeover mode are FANTASTIC!!! You can run them manually, or let them run the show for you...and it doesn't take much effort to get those changeovers frame accurate too! If anyone desires to use these units for changeover booths, tell Peter Stefanos at Pennywise that you want the latest "Film-Tech Coupled" EPROM and email me for the wiring specifics and upgrades that the fine folks at Pennywise have programmed into this chip. Why do you characterize the DTS changeover as "not perfectly timed"? For clarification, it doesn't changeover when it sees _any_ timecode, but it changes over when it sees timecode on or after the start of the reel. So the 3' or so of timecode on the head does not disrupt anything. (I don't think you meant to imply such, but I think someone might misread you.)
(Of course, if you want to prevent the DTS box from autoswitching, and you've already given in to the "cheating" impulse and used relays, well, the solution should be clear...)

But then again, I've never set up any digital system other than a DTS-6D for changeover, so I can't comment on the DA20, really. Though the idea of a fixed changeover time seems screwy to me, since unfortunately some prints come with shredded tails and you don't necessarily have 7 seconds between cue dots and 1 second after (sure, you can re-cue them, but we usually don't).
Anyhow, what I meant with regard to "cheating" was that you could configure the DTS box for single-projector operation, and then use a relay to switch between the two timecode readers at will (I could imagine there being problems with this approach, of course).

By the way, I used to run old beaten up prints at college that had substantial frames/footage missing at the end of the reels. You would be amazed at how effective a piece of white Artist's tape is on the outboard edge of the print to signal "start motor 2", followed by another piece on the last frame of the reel. I was able to get within a couple of frames accuracy using this method never even looking at the screen. Unfortunately, you can't run the prints on the fly (such as if they show up late), for this approach requires the use of a frame counter and prep-work.
The DFP-3000 is merely an SDDS player, which also gives me extra inputs on top of what the CP200 offers for things such as a 5.1 DVD, CDS digital sound, mag dubber, or just whatever comes along. 
Bear in mind this is not a commercial theater here.
Not so fast with your "designed poorly" crack. With Dolby and SDDS, there has to be processing of the incoming video data to convert it to a contiguious bit stream that then gets processed into audio.
Sure, one way would be to have two identical "front ends" to give each projector it's own video processor and digital decoder and then merely switch the output of the digital processor so the projector plays. This scheme would not need motor relays. However, it would require twice the processing and cost nearly twice as much.
However, the bulk of these installations are going to be for single-projector. Do you expect every purchaser of SDDS or SRD to have to pay a substantial cost increase to have the 2nd projector capability? With the analog optical soundtrack, the increase in cost to support a 2nd projector is very minimal but this is not the case, for the moment at least, for a digtal front end.
So the "cheat" is to share the video and digital processing between the two projectors. Using the motor relays, the video processor "knows" when to start looking at the incoming projector. In this manner, both Dolby and Sony can offer a common unit that can handle either 2 projectors or 1 that doesn't cost significantly more than just making one that handles a single projector.
So the design is not "poor" as you term it but in actuality, "cleaver" and effective. Sony did a better job on theirs in that one can select the changeover delay to suit the installtion and/or operator. Dolby keeps track of when the operator actually selects the incoming projector to get a good match as well. I'd swear that the DA-10 did a better job of this than the DA-20 or CP-500 though.
Now, if you don't want to "cheat," you are certainly welcome to purchase two DA-20s and merely switch their outputs to avoid that nasty motor relay issue.
As to DTS, I'm pretty sure you could switch the TC signals on the fly (either with a relay or with an appropriate MUX) and have decent changeovers. The DTS does a 30msec crossfade when it detects a splice, the same would apply on such a reader switch.

I don't object to the idea of needing a relay. I do object to the idea of the customer having to supply it. In my mind, if needed, the relay should be located inside the processor (perhaps on an optional daughtercard or something). This is my personal opinion as to how systems should be designed, and I can understand if you don't agree. Fundamentally it comes down to how "plug and play" a system should be, versus requiring custom hardware, equipment, knowledge, etc.
So to answer you directly: "No," I don't expect 1-projector systems to pay a substantial cost. I think a relay is not a substantial cost

As for DTS, I thought it was a 300ms crossfade, not a 30ms. But since 300ms is 7 frames, and 1 frame is 42ms, perhaps you are right. Still, when I hear the fade audibly, it sure seems like more than 30ms. Not that I'm the hallmark of human audio perception or anything.

Dolby should supply the relay eh? For who's projector? Does yours have 120V or 230V? Is it single phase or 3-phase? AC or DC (yes some have used DC motors so they can have variable speed). 50Hz or 60Hz? Does your projector use pulse start (like the AA-2 and other european projectors) or continious? Just where do you hook it in?
Now to the installation...so lets say the entire world worked on 120VAC 60Hz single phase motors. After all, we are Americans and are arrogant about such things
. So now what? You need to run a 120 volt line from each projector to the sound processor. You have a high-voltage line to deal with all of the way back to the soundrack (2-projector booths don't often use consoles for their sound systems and by definition, one definately doesn't have the processor in the rack). What are the lazy technicians gonna do? Well there is that solar cell line that runs at mic level that goes from essentially the same places so you have this prolonged parallel run with the cell. One or both of those runs are bound to have a changeover command with them as well. If you are lucky the back emf spike from the motor turning on won't cause a false trigger on the changeover line. I guess Dolby and Sony should provide a capacitor for that too huh?
And speaking of changeover command lines, all these years everyone has required the installers to provide their own changeover command, typically by a latching relay (P&B KB series typcially)...the slackers, no wonder they thought they could get away with those motor relays! But you called em on it John!
Ok, the above is a bit over the top but it goes to illustrate that your arguement has little to no merit. This is PROFESSIONAL equipment and the installer is expected, quite reasonably, to provide the unique interfaces specific to the equipment that is being matched up. This is, of course within reason. Dolby provided a reasonable interface that will allow an easy interface with common parts in most installations (I'm sure there is some projector out there that can be shown to make it difficult).
Heck for single projector users (again, the vast majority), Dolby DOES provide a wire link so it is "ready out of the box."
Running two low voltage, low current DC lines to each projector via an interface relay, is the best solution to the problem thus far.
Now if you want to pick on Dolby's design on the whole motor start relay issue go for the easy one....WHY did Dolby decide that both motor relays and the changeover common wire(s) should SHARE a single pin on a 9-pin D-sub? 3-4 wires on a d-sub pin (pin-5 to be specific) is a bit much! To then proceed to not define pins 6, 7 and 8 adds insult to injury! Making this mistake on the DA-10 is one thing, to perpetuate it to the DA-20 and all later processors is inexcusable.

However, I have the basement readers. IIRC Dolby Digital is 26 frames ahead of picture. I'm reading it at roughly the analog position or about 20 frames ahead of picture. I do kinda wonder if the relay-induced digital C/O really serves any purpose since in my opinion 7.75 seconds after motor start (minus the offset) is too long and the manual one will only be about 1/6 second too late anyway.

Nope, the DFP-3000 is not the master processor. I have a Dolby CP200 with Aux rack and THAT is the master processor. You and others may disagree, but I strongly feel the CP200 properly equipped can not be topped. Leaving the EQ to the Dolby, this greatly improves the quality of the audio as well.
