This plate was left over in the pile of parts that was a disassembled Simplex 35, & then put back together. What is it? It looks familiar.

Bothersome detail: it suddenly struck me that it's odd because it doesn't have grease, oil, or ground-up movies all over it.

Looks like an adapter plate used to mount a Simplex 35 (or practically any other projector such as a Century, Brenkert, E-7, Super, etc.) on an RCA 9030/9050 soundhead.

Looks like an adapter plate for Simplex to RCA. You mount it to the bottom of the Simplex and this allows you to run on an RCA soundhead.

Confirmed! That is an adapter plate I had on my RCA 9031 soundheads to mount a Westar (Century) projector head.

Thanks, guys!
These are on 4 star sound heads.
So where the adapter plate came from, who knows!

Also note that the gear mesh adjustment screw is missing.

The other part looks a lot like a ruler....
