We have ordered a new replacement reel already. But be advised we had an analog sound problem in Reel 6 (The credits reel) of The Tuxedo. As soon as we moved it out of our digital house to an analog house is when we noticed it. What it sounded was a loud rumbling sound almost drowning out the outtake dialog of the credits which lasted until the rating card. It only occurs on this reel only as all others are fine in analog sound.

This could be a misaligned dts timecode which is printed too close to the analogue tracks. It happened a few years ago with the German release prints of "Titanic" and made the prints practically unplayable in analogue.

The centerline of the analog track should be 0.243 inches (6.17 mm) from the reference edge of the film. The centerline of the DTS time code track should be 0.297 inches (7.54 mm) from the same edge, per SMPTE Recommended Practice RP115.------------------

If the print has timecode, then your sound head needs alignment. Run your buzz track and make the necessary adjustments.Karen at DTS

Thanks, Karen but it is not a misaligned sound head. Since my initial posting. We moved it to another non digi house and the problem persisted. John is probably right on the misaligned DTS code. I checked each channel in the booth monitor and it is mostly distorted out of the left channel. Last week our replacement came and the problem went away.

I had a print of 'A Knight's Tale' last year which had an analog sound problem with reel 1. The adds/trailers were fine. But then we were listening to crosstalk throughout reel 1. As soon as the reel change splice went through the problem went away. (And if you recal,
the 1-->2 reel change happens mid-scene.) When I was building the print and had made the splice you could see that the soundtracks did not match up vertically. So the soundtrack on Reel 1 was printed just slightly off vertical center. If i remeber correctly I think it was printed to high (to far towards the edge of the film)
