I read today a Columbia note for Italian print of xXx. It says that xXx is printed in 1.40:1 instead od 2.35 and to pay attention to frame correctly because in some scene there will be the frameline, so adjust to minimize the problem.
They say that was printed in 1.40 for an error in the master negative.
But... isn't now the Cinemascope 1.39:1???

Unfortunately, the overlap at the cement splices in the negative is evidently wide enough to intrude into the 0.825 x 0.690 inch projectable area specified by standard SMPTE 195, especially if the framing is not "perfect". In effect, you are being requested to closely monitor and adjust your framing, and if necessary, project with less image height (e.g., bring in the top and bottom masking) to hide the splice lines.
Another way around this problem would be if they optically printed to make the duplicate negatives, cropping out the splice overlap lines. But the anamorphic prints would still be 2.39:1.
The standard projectable area of 0.825 x 0.690 inches with a 2X anamorphic lens works out to a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, sometimes rounded to 2.40:1. 1.40:1 makes no sense, and may be a typo.

1,40:1 was my mistake, Columbia wrote 2.40:1 on the warning.
