I have a Alpha 5 deck platter which the brush in the variac failed(statco), so I Pulled it off the platter to get to the brush and to find out the variac will not come out of the housing. It looks like the only way to get it out is to cut the housing or grinding the welds to get the enclosure off of the device. I take it these were not suppose to be field servicable or am I doing something wrong. The variac is the type with the metal connecting rod from the slide to the disk not the cable type.
Any help is appreciated thanks

Marc,
The Variac does indeed come out! Look at the very end hub wiper assy, where the shaft comes through it and you should find a small allen screw, or set screw. Loosen that and then pull the shaft out of the variac. Then you will be able to remove the variac assy less the shaft. The wiper assy will stay on the variac if I remember correctly. The varic is a slightly modified STACO 1010 and is quite common in electronics supply houses. The burshes are also available seperately.

You got it I missed the screws at the other end, duh.
For some reason I thought the shaft was part of the transformer.

Pat, I've done it alot, but not in quite a long time!! I guess Strong Gear is getting like the stuff from Maytag....Lately its been motor brushes, and turning the armatures down. Some of the Alphas are getting to have quuite a few running years piled on them.

Mark; My "hands-on" time anymore is greatly reduced, unfortunately. As soon as you mentioned the correct method to change those brushes it came back to me in a rush. Those were the good old days. It's a little like a bicycle, though. I aligned a couple Super Lume-X's not too long ago and it was fun. Too bad I remember carrying so many of those 61000-series power supplies upstairs, too...
